Oscar, are they used a lot on yearlings being prepped for sale? I had heard it but then one hears so many things that may or may not be true. How common is it do you know? Do you find the yearlings lose condition badly once they are sold and no longer get steroids?

Steroids are not allowed for young horses sold at public auction in the U. S., but I have heard of alternative substances.

There are at least 2 yearling consignors in South Africa that I suspect use steroids. Their horses look uncommonly and uniformly too well developed.

Everybody knows who they are.

Barry, do they go "off the boil" once they are taken off steroids, do you know?

Of course they do. They shrink up. It is like pin pricking a balloon.

Because racing is a muggs game, some trainers are blatantly using steriods and have had positives for abnormal testosterone levels
and nothing is being done about it. Those that police racing are hiding the truth as steriods are becoming big business.Besides Joe Punter could not care a damb as if he is consistantly backing the "money" horse he is getting a good deal. We keep on opening these types of threads but also forget about who was fingered and when, and continue backing horses from those stables because the money is bang on.

Why should other people be doing that job, when there are paid proffesionals not doing their jobs. We have blogged and highlighted one individual on this very site. Got done for a maiden winner in KZN using a bulking steriod yet had several positives waiting for 2nd sample testing. No news after 10 months????We even have a few posters singing the trainer's praises and touting him to be the next Terrance Millard.

1. The jockey club should have a public website where
- once the samples are taken on the racecourse of every winning horse
+ the sample numbers are entered
+ the persons name who took the samples
- each step of the testing process which spans over many days
+ the person doing the testing
+ the results of each step of the testing

2. Then no samples will go missing
3. No samples will be broken
4. No samples can be removed from the testing process

This process cannot be implemented by the jockey club as transparency will result in many prominent figures receiving negative publicity?
This was the last justification I heard by a member of the testing team.

As for the testing process
- no testing is completed when there are holidays during the week
- no testing is completed when samples are taken at night racing
The testing process takes too long and one public holiday results chaos as the work heaps up.

The steroids pattern
1. The horse (mare or geldings only) must have ability to run
2. 12 week course
3. Few runs over 1200 and 1400 m, sit at the back - press the button at the 400m
4. Then further, 1800 or 2000m after the 12 week course - bang in the box
5. Cannot continue with the steroids, the blood thickens and the horse dies from internal organ failure.
6. Body builders also use the same steroids, doubles the number of red blood cells thaat carry oxygen - hence giving twice as much endurance - having double the amount of oxygen available in a days training or a race.
7. Body builders end up with kidney and liver problems using this, guess horses suffer the same fate.
8. You normally get around 10/1 these horses, so while we cannot change and become transparent - banker them in the P6.
Its been around for many years - remember the female trainer on the Vaal - or was it the lion she kept that made the horses run better over distance?

Also heard about that - why would there be 'no news after 10 months'?

Look at the make-up of the NHA board..................honary positions............a number of board members who know absolutely nothing about regulation or even what to regulate.
