Gibraltar Blue out to fill gap on De Kock's cv
Racing post
Preview: South Africa, Saturday 2.25pm GMT
Kenilworth: Betting World Cape Flying Championship (Grade 1) 5f, turf, 3yo+
THE former Tommy Stack-trained Gibraltar Blue (Mike de Kock/Anton Marcus) is ante-post favourite to record her first Grade 1 win in the Cape Flying Championship at Kenilworth on Saturday.
TheRock Of Gibraltar Irish-bred has won five of her six South African starts, despite being six months wrong in most of them, and her favoured method of racing is out in front.
De Kock said: "This is not something we ever elected todo. She just started going off in front and she was doing it so easily that we thought we would leave it that way. You don't want to change a winning formula.
"She is extremely fast and she has a big stride length. Also I haven'tseen too many horses with as high a cruising speed as she's got."
De Kock reckons this is his first runner in the Cape Flying, one of just three of the current 32 South African Grade 1 races that he has never won.
The favourite's main market rival is What A Winter (Mike Bass/Karl Neisius), who reverts to sprinting after seeming not to stay in the Cape Guineas.
Bass said: "Karl will sit off the pace and I have the confidence that his mount will be able to catch the usual suspects like Gaultier and Blue Tiger. But whether he will be able to catch the filly I don't know because I don't know how good she is.
"If the race was over six furlongs I would be very confident but I wouldn't be surprised if he is good enough over this trip too. Karl rides him every day and he thinks he will be."
Zimbabwe Derby winner Earl Of Surrey (Geoff Woodruff/Derreck David) fractured his pelvis after winning the 2009 Golden Horse Casino Sprint but his recent form suggests he might be coming back to somewhere near his best.
Woodruff said: "I think he is back to himself. He was particularly effective in his last two starts over this distance and, if he runs to form, he will be amongst them."

Just got back from a very smelly Turffontein - our premier racecourse in Gauteng - where the rubbish dump is reallly flourishing in the humid conditions. As expected, Codega found the trip far too short (but we felt we had to have a go from the 1 draw) - watch her if there ever is a race over 2000 plus for maiden fillies, An email query sent by me in terms of the programming of races did not even rate a reply form the powers that be(td)(td), Well they have lost another (be it very small time) owner - I will not 'invest' in another horse until this sh*t is sorted out.
Some longer price runners to consider today imo:
In race 4, I like Baron of Breedon to beat the heavily backed K Jet
In race 5, consider Icy Compliment (break a leg orange) in a weak field - back on softer ground and her favorite track with Figgy up
In race 6, Count Dumani's rating is still coming down, include at least the scratched stable companion in the P6
In race 8, the Laird coupling is a must for the P6, Goose Valley holds Woman of the Year on their last meeting, and I think Magic Penny is better the Goose Valley
Play well
