Lifted this from the racing post website, can`t find any news on this on South African websites
A groom has drowned after falling off a racehorse during morning exercise on a beach near Cape Town.
The 35-year-old man, yet to be named by police, fell off in ankle-deep water only metres from fellow riders during a routine exercise session for trainer Mike Stewart's string on Noordhoek Beach.
According to the Cape Times, the rider disappeared in seconds and was later found drowned.
"I've never experienced anything like this," said Stewart, speaking to the Cape Times. "He fell, and the next second he just wasn't there. There was no struggling. I couldn't see his arms or anything; it was just a tragic accident."
The groom at the centre of the tragedy was employed on a temporary basis by Stewart. His body was spotted in the waves after an air search.
"We fall a lot, especially on the beach because of the soft sand," added Stewart. "But nothing like this has [ever] happened."
