SA Racing Confusing

I have a few questions in line with some of the articles or posting on other horse blog sites.

Is Horse Racing a sport or an Industry?

If it is a sport it is the only sport listed on the JSE.

If it is an industry why are the sport commissions investigating the transformation?

Phumelela being a listed entity wont just be prescribed to by Government as this would be a bad precedent for both business and government.

Now where do we put the Breeders? Sport or business?

Where are the Bookmakers,Including the online sites and TAB? Business my guess by which part belong where? TAB vs TAB Gold vs TABOnline

RA, NHRA, Horse Trust, Gold Circle, Jockeys academy other smaller associations. Who pays what?

Race Tracks these dont fit into Phumelela model of ownership so are these part of the sport or the Industry? Dunno

Personally i see two components that just dont seem to work together at the moment. More toe stomping than co-operation.

And then finally the actual player of the sport i guess owners and Trainers. Who helps them? Dunno.

@Shayne:

I have addressed this question in a document (which is collecting cobwebs or in file 13!) presented to the DTI, Gambling Boards, KZN & Gauteng Premiers, etc. Probably, that's what has resulted in this Parliamentary Commission.

A holistic, inclusive approach (total removal of blinkers about the current paradigms) with input from and involvement by all role players is the first step. The next would be scrapping / killing off corporatisation. Thereafter, marketing the industry by facilitating and enticing entry to a far broader base than the attendant mostly elitist players.

As much as other codes of sport are organic and only for themselves, so should horseracing be.

@carlosthe jackal:

You forget, I was not ever involved in an accident, yet I prayed for you and wished you speedy recovery (blunt & insensitive, but that's the language I can also resort to!)

I suppose you will say the same for Zuma and his entourage in Government, and the officials in the industry who have no idea whatsoever of their customer.... the punter!

You yourself were a punter, before you became an owner and then a trainer.

In the Indian language, such people are called 'namak haraam'! (Ungrateful is too soft a word)!

Enjoy your sarcasm while you still have those around to applaud you!

NB: If you want to be cynical, be so within the context of what I observed as a punter.... not an owner!

BTW: I did hold colours and had at least three wins within two years.... and you?

@carlos:

your raw comment was definitely uncalled for- I respect all posters within the greater picture, even if we disagree!

the only way forward would be by engaging one another, discussing and finding mutual solutions for the common benefit. it's not just shoving down condtions and decisions people's throats... those days are gone with us (albeit, still around within elemnts of the ANC!)
