PHUMELELA MEDIA RELEASE
SUBJECT: Final field for Victory Moon Handicap
DATE: Monday 8 November 2010
RELEASED BY: Phumelela Gaming and Leisure Limited

Mother Russia will make her first appearance on the racecourse in five months when she lines up for the Grade 2 Victory Moon Handicap over 1800m at Turffontein on Friday night.
The five-year-old mare is one of five runners declared by trainer Mike de Kock. To make matters even more interesting De Kock has engaged Belgian-born jockey Christophe Soumillon to ride the multiple Grade 1 winner.
Soumillon will captain the international jockeys’ team who will be riding in The Citizen International Jockeys Challenge. The first leg takes place at Turffontein on Friday night with the second leg at Kenilworth on Sunday.
Joining Soumillon are Ireland’s Kieren Fallon, Hayley Turner from Britain, American Martin Garcia, Umberto Rispoli from Italy and Halis Karatas of Turkey. Anton Marcus will captain the local side and his team comprises Piere Strydom, Anthony Delpech, Andrew Fortune, Muzi Yeni and Gavin Lerena.
Mother Russia has been rested since finishing down the field in the Grade 1 Gold Challenge at Clairwood in June. The daughter of Windrush, who has won 12 of her 23 starts, has also been entered in the R2-million Sansui Summer Cup to be run over 2000m on 27 November so De Kock will be looking for a decent run on Friday.
His other runners include Zirconeum, Sweetie Pie, Perana and Badger Lake, who is currently the reserve runner.
Geoff Woodruff saddles Aluminium, Cracker Jack and Quick Single, and as the latter has just 50kg to shoulder, he should be most competitive in this field. Derreck David gets the ride.
The Listed Gardenia Handicap for fillies and mares over 1000m will also be run on Friday night and this looks a most competitive event. The speed will be on from the jump, especially with the likes of Gibraltar Blue, Mannequin, Mary Lou and Golden Secret in the line-up.

PHUMELELA MEDIA RELEASE
SUBJECT: Lerena gets called up for Jockeys’ Challenge
DATE: Wednesday, 10 November
RELEASED BY: Phumelela Gaming and Leisure Limited

JOCKEY Gavin Lerena has been given the call-up to represent the Proteas in The Citizen International Jockeys Challenge at Turffontein on Friday night 12 November and Kenilworth on Sunday 13 November.
Six of the best local jockeys will take on a hot team of internationals in four challenge races at each of the race meetings. Felix Coetzee was one of the jockeys given the nod, but he has commitments that weekend in Singapore and then Hong Kong and will not be able to ride.
Lerena rode two winners to take last year’s International Jockeys’ Challenge Bronze Saddle after coming into the team at the last minute to replace Kevin Shea. He gave notice last weekend that he was back in top form by bringing Flirtation home first in a driving finish to the Yellowwood Handicap. Earlier this year he also won two legs of the Triple Tiara, booting in Arcola in the Oaks and Fisani in the Gauteng Fillies Guineas.
The 24-year-old has ridden 545 winners (to 2 November) in his career and has raced successfully in Mauritius and Zimbabwe. Last season, in spite of being off the track for three months, first with a broken wrist and then recuperating from an operation on his knee, he still managed to finish 12th on the national jockeys’ log and had the ninth-highest stake earnings.
The Protea side will now include Anton Marcus (captain), Anthony Delpech, Piere Strydom, Muzi Yeni, Andrew Fortune and Gavin Lerena. The internationals will be represented by French champion Christophe Soumillon (captain), Kieren Fallon, Turkish rider Halis Karatas, England’s Hayley Turner, USA-based Mexican Martin Garcia and Italian Umberto Rispoli.
