Hanagan picks up title as Hughes draws blank
PAUL HANAGAN won his first ever British Flat champion jockeys' title after Richard Hughes was unable to close the gap on him at Doncaster on Saturday afternoon.
Hanagan went into the final day of the season with 191 winners on the board, two clear of his rival, and with the pair failing to get among the winners on Town Moor, he lifted the trophy.
He said: "I have so many people to thank, but I'd also like to say what an absolute gentleman Richard Hughes has been. I know how hard he has worked. I had a lot of respect for him before but I have even more now."
Hanagan's boss Richard Fahey said: "It is marvellous, it is some achievement and it is thoroughly deserved."
Hughes was magnanimous in defeat. He said: "I am proud of what I have done but it wasn't to be.
"It was a great year, I gave it a go but it wasn't for me."
Both jockeys showed prominently on their rides in the 6f contest which opened the card, with Hughes faring best of the pair to finish fourth. Newcomer Manaaber took the race for Barry and Richard Hills.
Hughes again did best in the second race, with his mount Fettucine finishing third behind Seal Rock.
Hanagan went closest in race three, his mount No Poppy finishing second to Shesastar, who was providing Silvestre de Sousa with his 100th winner of the season.
Race four went the way of the Hayley Turner-ridden Horseradish while the pair both again finished out of the frame in the fifth which went to Ceilidh House. When Times Up won the totesport.com November Handicap the game was over for Hughes.
The final day of the Flat season got off to a dramatic start when all of the runners bar one - Rational Act - left the stalls. The starter immediately put his flag up and a false start was declared. All the runners were pulled up and able to take their chance in take two.
Despite the battle between the two this year, Paddy Power do not expect the pair to figure in the race for the2011 jockeys' title. They make Ryan Moore their evens favourite, with Kieren Fallon next in at 3-1, while Hanagan is a 4-1 chance and Hughes is given a quote of 7-1.

Richard Hughes hit with 19-day totting-up ban
RICHARD HUGHES, who pushed Flat champion jockey Paul Hanagan all the way to the line in a thrilling climax to the Flat season, has been given a 19-day ban following an inquiry by the BHA disciplinary panel on Thursday.
Hughes, already banned from November 16 -29 for earlier use of the whip and careless riding offences, admitted he was guilty of allowing his mount Yurituni to drift right and take the Paul Hanagan-ridden winner Ritual off his intended line at Lingfield on November 4, resulting in a one-day ban for careless riding and 18 days under the totting-up procedure.
His latest ban will finish on December 14, meaning he is ineligible to ride for a total of 29 days. Four days of the ban have been deferred for six months until June 14, 2011.
Speaking after the hearing, Hughes said: "I feel I didn’t have a fair hearing today – I’ve had no leniency for what I’ve done for racing over the last six months. It has left a very bitter taste in my mouth."

And with Johnston likely to have his usual gazillion winners then 4/1 Fallon could be a fair bet if he doesn't have any whoopsies during the season.

Hughes Guineas winner in Indian steroid scandal
India: The Indian racing community has been rocked to its core by a steroids scandal involving a recent Classic winner ridden by Richard Hughes and two other horses both placed in Guineas races.
Ocean And Beyond, favourite for the Indian Derby on February 6, faces disqualification after testing positive for the anabolic steroid boldenone after being partnered by Hughes to win last month's Indian 2,000 Guineas at Mahalaxmi racecourse in Mumbai.
Also facing disqualification if initial findingsare confirmed are Star Future, runner-up in the 2,000 Guineas, and Eloise, who was third in the Indian 1,000 Guineas.
Boldenone, the substance at the centre of the scandal, is a banned steroid that could be used to build up muscle andstand more rigorous training.
Not only are the three horses concerned among the best in India, where racing has boomed in recent years, they are trained by three of the nation's most successful trainers in SK Sunderji (Ocean And Beyond), Cooji Katrak (Star Future) and master trainer Pesi Shroff (Eloise).
The initial samples were tested and analysed at the Newmarket-based Horse Racing Forensic Laboratory.
According to the Times of India, all three have expressed disbelief at the findings. They will now face an inquiry and a fine and/or suspension if the ‘B' sample also returns a positive test.
Run under the auspices of the Royal Western India Turf Club, the Mumbai Classics are India's senior races - in effect the national Classics.
Hughes was afforded a standing ovation after partnering Ocean And Beyond to a well-backed victory as Guineas favourite in December.
RWITC chairman Vivek Jain commented: "It is shocking to find as many as three horses testing positive in the two Indian Classics run in December. It is unprecedented and intriguing. The stewards will conduct a thorough enquiry into the matter very soon."
India, however, has never exactly been immune to such unfortunate developments in the past.
Saddle Up was disqualified after winning Indian Derby in 1999 while Yana forfeited the Oaks in 2008.
