I make it my business to trawl the various local racing websites to keep abreast of what’s really going on in this game. The African Betting Clan, the Scot Free Racing Website and Racing Web are the true blue fonts of raw and completely uncooked information as to what is happening and what the prevailing mood is of the average enthusiast and punter. And when I use the word ‘average’ , I probably unfairly downplay the level of expertise, experience and passion in some of those posters – soldiers like Magic Lips, Garrick Bergh, Warren Laird, Hilton Witz, Jess Kyriacou, Charl Pretorius, Rob Faux and there are many others from days past and present that discuss, debate and exchange ideas, all in the name of a longstanding love of the game. The names just listed could easily be members of a Board running any racing jurisdiction in this country – and very likely be a lot more effective too, judging by the current sad state of affairs. More sadly, nobody seems to listen and when compared to the propaganda spewed forth by the sports governing organs, then comparisons of the forum news versus the formal news is tantamount to either running carefree and wild in nature with the bees or eating the processed and packaged honey off a shelf at Checkers. And I know what I would rather be doing. And thus I wonder whether it is my imagination and a mild bout of FIFA World Cup fever, or am I accurately detecting a snowballing sense of dissent against horseracing totalisator betting?
