Natal Betting Percentages
15 years 1 month ago
Every saturday morning I listen to Mr Finder on USO telling us how much the bookmakers do for us,but every week the betting % for Natal racing is ridiculous.Every race for tomorrow nights racing is 140% +,and the 7th race which has established form is 155%.I know pricing up on racing is not the easiest thing in the world, especially in SA,but the bookmakers in Natal in particular seem to have no confidence in their own markups.Every horse that gets claimed there gets shortened to half it's original price, but there seems to be no insight into whether it's represents the new price or not.
Why don't the bigger bookmakers in Durban just make their own prices like Bettingworld.Bookmakers only want to bet to mug punters who don't know whether a horse should be 1-1 or 2-1,but in Durban in particular it seems to me that the bookmakers don't either.

From what I am told all betting from Saturday will be done by a team working in conjunction with Dean Finder. This will be for all centres. So basically whoever did Friday nights Natal card will no longer be involved. I am not sure what changes will be implemented but I do know their is a total change in personnel (NATAL)

Gatvol - please give me a crash course in betting percentages - how they are calculated, what it means, what ideal is and the consequences of being either side of this "ideal".
Thanks

Well suga, I'm sure the pro's can give you a detailed explanation, but in short:
If a horse is priced up at evens (1/1) it means that according to the betting is has 50% chance of winning (and a 50% chance of losing); 2/1 means it has a 33.333$ chance of winning (and a 66.666%) chance of losing and so on; so if one calculates the chances of all the runners in a race in this way, in theory it should add up to 100%; but the bookies need to make a living so they price up to 140% and higher (but this usually comes down closer to race time when some horses 'drift').
Hopes that helps

Try and get a bookie to offer you 5/4 on a toss of a coin and the % are in your favour...
You also got to remember the bookie would love to fill his book, but the way the races are set up this is impossible and is why the % appear stingy. 1 and 2 horses being punted in races is no good to punter or bookie!!

I understand this has the potential to become a LONG thread...
so effectively you look at a whole field, and work out each % chance that a horse ought to have of winning, based on percentage? e.g. 16/1 ~ 100/17?
And then add up the percentages to land up at a field combined percentage?
If you have one 1/1 and a 2/1 shot in the race, you already have 83.3%.
Thanks - as long as my understanding above is correct, I've definitely learnt a fair bit about percentages today
