Impressive performances by three-year-olds Irish Flame and Noordhoek Flyer on the weekend saw them rocket up the Vodacom Durban July log just behind Pocket Power. They are now in second and third place respectively after being nine and eight last week.

Irish Flame ended Pierre Jourdan’s Triple Crown bid with a facile nine-length victory in the SA Derby (Grade 1) at Turffontein while Noordhoek Flyer could not have been more impressive in winning the KRA Guineas (Grade 2) at Greyville. This has resulted in defending Vodacom Durban July champion, Big City Life, easing to fourth place on the latest log issued yesterday.

Another big mover is Saturday’s unexpected Champions Challenge (Grade 1) winner Regal Ransom who shot from being out of the top thirty last week to ninth position this week. He clearly reveled in the soft underfoot conditions on a rain-soaked Turffontein track as he has yet to be beaten on this surface. None the less it was an excellent effort.

KRA Fillies Guineas (Grade 2) winner Gibraltar Blue also moved into the top twenty, 24 last week to 14th this week although trainer Mike de Kock expressed reservations post race about the filly taking her chances in the Vodacom Durban July.

Service Ace and the filly Queen’s Bay have moved into contention to just outside of the top twenty but Oracy slipped from 15th to 18th, one position ahead of his stable companion Dan De Lago who will need to prove that he has overcome his poor record at the starting gate before he is assured of a place in the final field.

The R3 million Vodacom Durban July (Grade 1) will be run over 2200m at Greyville Racecourse on Saturday, July 31.

Listed below are the top 30 on the log with the previous week’s position in brackets.

I agree. The handicappers are not obligated but given our scarce experience with ante post betting, it's a great aid for punters to see which are the horses with a real chance of running rather than pouring money (at short prices) on horses who were never even going to get a run.

I hope my persistent nagging for the Met log (which is an obligation and still never appeared) contributed to this thoughtful service.
