It used to be called the Whitbread!!

Sandown 24th April
It`s a shame that races lose their shizam, the Whitbread used to be my favourites day racing of the year the meeting that brought the curtain down on the Jumps season(finally magic huh?) that was before the authorities got greedy and introduced summer jumping(cruel sport imo).
Now registered on the Schedule as the Bet365 Gold Cup a 3 1/2 mile steeple chase on the hardest/toughest track in the UK,the Railway fences and that uphill finish assured that there was always a frilling finish to the stamina sapping feature.
First run in the 1950`s(ok im not sure of the exact date
) it has been won by some superstars of the Jump game Arkle(1965) Mill house(1967) and Desert Orchid(1988 wow really that long ago).
The Trip and Uphill finish have caused it`s share of problems in the past, with Numerous winners being flung out for causing interference something that is unheard of in the Jump game never mind one of the biggest punting races on the calendar. The Dikler,Givus a Buck oh and the unluckiest horse in Jump racing history Cahervillahow
In 1991 Charlie Swan ridden Cahervillahow got the better of Docklands Express at the last but on the run-in Mouse Morris' charge hung right into Kim Bailey's nine-year-old who only went down by three parts of a length. Cahervillahow, who had already suffered bad luck when accidentally being withdrawn from the Cheltenham Gold Cup entries, was placed second by the Stewards much to the chagrin of his connections as well as many unbiased onlookers. An appeal was overturned and Cahervillahow went on to complete his hat-trick of bad fortune when finishing second in the Grand National - the void race in 1993-Phone the samaritians!!!!!
Anyway it used to be the Whitbread, look out for the race on Saturday and hold your breath if your coming with a challenge up the hill.!
Monkerhostin(yellow) 25/1 winner last year
ps not to worry Magic the card also has a Group2 flat race over a mile with some tasty looking early entries including Paco Boy and Confront and a Grp3 over 1 1/2 miles. Saturdays Whitbread card

Oh yeah, Hibs. This is my favourite time of year. Comparing the Classics to jumps racing is like comparing a banquet to a mouldy piece of cheese and a stale biscuit,
