hundred and two people is a record in terms of overloading related arrests, said Cape Town traffic services on Friday.

An 18-seater school bus was impounded and the driver arrested after it was spotted travelling through Mitchells Plain packed with 102 children.

Traffic services spokesperson Merle Lourens told News24, “This is a record.”

“We’ve stopped overloaded taxis and mini buses before, but never one with so many people,” she said.

Merle said the bus was an old midi bus, and had been driving with a fake licence disc and number plates.

The unroadworthy bus was also operating with ineffective rear breaks and had perspex fitted in place of safety glass.

The 49-year-old driver was taken to the Mitchells Plain police station, and is set to appear at the Mitchells Plain Magistrate Court at a later date to face charges of driving without a licence and driving with a false clearance certificate amongst others.

The owner of the bus will also be charged with permitting an unlicensed driver to drive a bus, and will be facing further charges of fraud and negligence relating to the Child Protection Act.
