As reported on the Mike Bass website:

Air Combat Dies
Mark Bass, 12/02/2010

It is with deep regret that we announce the passing of our “A” division horse Air Combat who died on Wednesday morning after suffering a sudden bout of colic.

After the Cape summer season he was sent to Arc -En-Ciel Stud to be rested but on Wed morning was found to have a serious bout of colic from which he was not able to recover and was subsequently euthanised.

Air Combat (MR 101) was a winner of 5 races from 24 starts (20%) and was further placed 11 times (45%), including 5 graded races. His earnings were R412, 560.

The talented son of Jet Master out of the talented mare Shoot The Booze, was owned by Marsh and Guy Shirtliff, Wally Britz and Phillip Kahan. He was a firm favourite among all our stable staff and will be sorely missed.

Highlights:

Career Wins - 5

3rd in the Gr2 Peninsula Handicap

3rd in the Gr 2 Betting World 1900

4th in the Gr 2 Ocean Basket Green Point Stakes

2nd in the Gr 3 Winter Classic

4th in the Thukela Listed Handicap

Very sad...on of my favourite local horses...

Nice horse. Could have had a little Feature win in him. A pity.

Sad news indeed - at least Wally has the full sibling who has just come into the stable from the farm..........

Frodo...that's nice to know.
I'll certainly keep an eye on that one...
I was really hoping that Air Combat would get a feature win this year...been following him since he was a 2 year old but he was a bit off the really top horses...
Still, I'm sure that I'm not the only one who backs a horse repeatedly simply because it has a bit of presence or whatever else takes one's fancy.

Perpetual, just to be clear, the baby is in the Magner yard - not in the Bass yard; just came in the last 2 weeks and knowing Wally, it probably will only run as a 3 yr old....

I remember his maiden win at clairwood, one of the most imposing young horses I have ever seen.
