I really think this guy needs to be taken away from Cape Town and back to the academy for the year that he is off. I think the nhra are correct in their decision as the other guys with e and dagga in their systems were not high at the time whereas we all know that with an alcohol level that high in your blood stream you would still be drunk/hungover(according to the standards set by the regulator). I'm wondering if anyone here that supports a lesser sentence would allow a doctor with an alcohol level that high to operate on them? or to trivialise the matter if you took a P6 and the operator put in the incorrect numbers and you were the only winning ticket(you thought you had it) only to find the error as the person was drunk? Or ten horses came down around the turn because the jock made an error because he was drunk? He needs help yes but as a repeat offender he needs to be stopped before he causes big problems to himself or others.

My mate used to have a saying when talking about mass murderers/rapists etc
"hanging is too good for them, what they need a good kick up the arse"
lol

Like Magic says
this was Luke 'Cokeman'2nd chance
been bust before for coke
how many chances he deserves?
he probally doesnt like coke
just likes the smell of it
I remember a similair post about Gavin Howes
I was against it
but he deserves more of a chance than a druggie

he could also be sent to the UAE or Saudi to ride work (Doubt he'll be rushing out to get high/pissed there)

Sorry CnC no one besides politicians claim to be holier than thou, however how many times do we appease such situations only to be let down again and again and the normal call then naturally is why did we.
A year does sound long but it'll go quick, he should be made to help around the academy and various stables in the meantime, I guess a community type service would be the answer and a few visits to the shrink for good measure.
If he deserves his opportunities he'll be back, he's got to take responsibility though and it's gotta hurt.
I'm a pilot and if I arrived drunk I'd be thrown in jail and the key thrown away, different careers but the point is there.
I reckon the year is fair enough, JG in my opinion should have got longer, unfortunately tolerance has gone abit far in the 21st century

Agree with Garrick; if this is indeed already the 2nd chance he has blown, then he needs help away from the game and it is not a 'holier than thou' attidtude; it doesn;t matter one iota if I am a substance abuser in my private life, but he is affecting many others by his actions

I tried riding after a few Jonnies kept falling off couple of times thought the tale was the mane.
NOT ADVISED THE HORSIE ALSO GETS PISSED THEN. NOT A PRETTY SITE.

This is actually his 3rd chance
He has already had suspensions for Cocaine(Dec 2004) and Dagga(August 2005)
As per usual the aptly named 'chicken' who hides behind a pseudonym displays his ignorance.

There you go again you just cannot help yourself behind the security of your PC. I am in Cape Town in May and I will seek you out and then you will have all the opportunity to insult me to my face.

I hear what all of you are saying but if Andrew Fortune wasn't given his 4th?, 5th? or was it more? chance then he would not be the South African champion today.
Was there more chances for Andy because we all knew his ability and therefore was more forgiving?
Without going too much into the should he or shouldn't he debate let's focus on what should be done to assist jocks either young apprentices or otherwise so that they do not fall into the trap of substance abuse.
In Coleman's case...what about a life skills course...after this the jockey club can decide if they grant him another chance or send him on his way.
