Ante Post Betting in South Africa
15 years 5 months ago
It is one day before the races on January 1, 2010 in South Africa.
Can somebody explain to me why there are no advanced odds posted anyplace?
Has the policy recently changed?
I have noticed this lately.
What is the point of having bookies if this is the type of service available?
Why even call them Fixed Odds?

Come on Barry, they are still busy counting the profits from the Vaal today. For some reason the bookies only seem able to price up one Gauteng meeting at a time. However, when you see the %'s they bet to you realise the exercise is one of futility.
Expect it to open around 9/10 which is no real value if you consider how many first timers are in the race. Break a leg.

I agree with you completely Barry.
It seems though to be especially bad in Johannesburg/Gauteng whatever. They price up as late as they want.
The Durban folk are always first and price up 2 to 3 days in advance.
I guess the best place to enquire would be the bookmakers association (if they even still exist)
I feel the problem is that the betting gets done by a few, selected people now whereas in the old days it would get done by a whole panel of about 8 to 10 respected bookmakers.
I feel your frustration Sir.....In fact I share it wholeheartedly

Hollywood used to price up early. I believe than ran early ante-post for about a year.
In the end they turned it up because of lack of interest. There is so much racing apparently, that the majority of bets (by a big margin) is placed within 10 min of the start.
It probably just proves we are a nation of mugg punters.
(When I was much younger, I couldn't wait for the next racecard. Now it comes thick and fast and I hardly have time to study a card before race 1 jumps)

Barry...as you stated in previous posts, that you never take a fixed odds bet ( you dont bet with a bookmakers) so what does it matter to you.You are a tote punter so you can only place your bet on raceday so wheres the problem?

Finished second to Barry`s horse Polo, there was a few clues left round the site, but Harris`s post put me off,so was just a little under arm throw instead of a full toss..
