Interbet to launch new punting-INFO site for mobi users

By Leon Setaro

A bumper line up awaits punters this Sunday at Clairwood and there’s surely something to suit every punting style across the ten race program. We have bags of info up and coming from Summerveld so be sure to catch Interbet’s racing preview on raceday mid-morning. Find it on a favourite Interbet affiliated news site near you and get notified when it becomes available by subscribing to the notification list here

Looking back over the past 3 years of SA racing and the impact internet has had on how we play the game, it comes as no surprise that online punters have evolved into a somewhat sophisticated breed. Tough to please and rightly so, considering the wealth of racing information available to them via the many websites that have blossomed during this period. Betting sites, news sites, trainers’ sites, tipping sites, social networking sites, discussion forums etc.. all free from restrictive print media deadlines and able to deliver the news and info direct to Joe Online as it unfolds! A veritable feast compared to the racing of yesteryear when race and stable info. was considered the stuff secret societies were made of!

When it comes to racing information, the benefits of functioning within the internet loop are clear to see yet the overwhelming majority of punters in SA have never even seen a racing website. No doubt a lack of computer literacy (and access) is a contributing factor which is why Interbet has now prepared a cellphone racing info-mobi - to open up the new racing order to the public at large. This punting-info site is an extension of Interbet’s mobi-betting site and will be dedicated to taking racing info direct to the market. Best of all, a service that will remain free to followers of the sport of Kings.

At this stage the info-mobi will focus primarily on KZN horse racing but as the JHB and CPT feature seasons gather momentum, Interbet will be on a national hunt for the racing schnizness! The info-mobi is on trial this weekend before advertising goes out to the media over the next few weeks. Please take a look, your internet savvy pre-launch comments would be greatly appreciated – drop me an email on leon@interbetsa.co.za

This is what you get –

- Trainers’ comments from the KZN training tracks
- Race by race analysis by James Goodman (audio podcast .mp3)
- Investment of the day, racing column & pics by Leon Setaro
-
Card changes
-
Mobi-weather real-time link!

As with Interbet’s betting mobi-site, the new punting info mobi will work on any GPRS cellphone, even the old school ones! Get all the latest news, pics and punting related inside-info on your cellphone by entering the following into your mobi browser - news.interbet.co.za

So exactly how much value lies in listening to these ‘trainers’ comments’ and all the bits and pieces that emerge from behind the scenes? Well a very important lesson I quickly learnt in my camp-outs to the training tracks is that (in KZN) all horses are worked on average, a distance (excl. warm-up trotting) of 400m to 800m on the sand once a day and put under little if any pressure during workouts. This presents a very different scenario to the race itself which is run on grass, usually over a much greater distance, and at sustained speed with a highly strenuous end-requirement.

Understandably then, it is unrealistic to expect trainers to predict race performance with pinpoint accuracy. Having said that, there is value in noting what he/she has to say because horses are flesh and blood, highly specialized racing machines and changes can, and do occur back at home. As punters, hearing about the ‘what gives’ from behind-the-scenes can be a valuable guide to where we wager our hard earned and recession-tainted money. It’s less about whether the trainer thinks he will win or not, and more about the horse’s condition and the day to day changes. Is he fit and well, is he sound, with a niggle-free prep. Punters like to make their own choices.. that’s the major drawcard of the game and if there’s been a setback on the training tracks or at the stables, we would like to know about it. If a horse is showing steady improvement at work since his last run, that’s helpful info too and we would like to know about it. All sorts of things occur between formbook and raceday and every snip of info helps.. even if just to add depth to the racing experience. Ultimately it’s the information factor!; the formbook, the comments, the stories, and the pulse of life that sets the sport apart from the other gaming options, so surely high time for this to be made easily available to the punting market in its entirety.

Leon Setaro is a full time racing journalist for Interbet, bringing you the KZN inside story from Summerveld and beyond.

Interbet is an online racing and gaming service that offers direct betting into Tote pools on the Phumelela/Gold Circle Tote, as well as into SA’s only online Bookmakers’ exchange - where wholesale trade prices are king! Here bookies back and layoff amongst each other and the exchange comes alive on racedays when best prices are usually available during the final lead-up 15 minutes to race time. As a punter you get access to 30% to 100% better than retail fixed-odds and you can put in price requests straight onto the exchange for matching by over 100 SA bookies active on the system.
