I'm all for moving the July to avoid a clash...one should not be too caught up in the tradition thing to the extent where it is going to prejudice a really great event.
I particularly enjoy the build-up to the big race and it makes sense to move it to enable one to have a win-win situation with both events.
Would be fun trying to get some of the UK guys to stay on and enjoy one of our premier race days...

This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for SA to stage the biggest sporting event in the world. We might not get aother opportunity in a 100 years to be host.
I'm a racing fanatic, but still feel the July should take a back seat. To all the pessimist, this world cup will be a success, if not for the local team, for the country. Embrace it or ?!?@?# *&^

City of Durban signed a FIFA abide-by-the-rules clause. Any sporting event in the city, outside of the WC which attracts over a certain number of people (10 000 i believe), must be moved or cancelled.
As GC has to work with the city after 2010 (Greyville is leased), it would be brainless to tramp on toes.
Make the best of it and enjoy the one-off change

One-off is the operative word. I have no great intererst in soccer but I appreciate the magnitude of the event. The July will still be the July, and none of the lead-up meetings attract anything close to 10 000 spectators, so what really is the problem?

One would think the authorities are trying to avoid the mass migration of people from province to province , even if its for one or two days. Think of the congestion and chaos on roads airports and at any other attraction during the WC period. IMO its a no brainer

Is it me or did that letter sound like it was goldcircles idea to move the july.. Cause last i checked it's a fifa ruling that no other major sporting event is allowed to be held in the host country during the world. So that it not take the attention off the footie. Could be wrong..

So any horse running in the July next year will effectively be 1 month closer to his/her next engagement. Bollocks to fifa. The TOP horses run in the july , its not like delaying the run of a maiden they should have their comapigns clearly mapped out for the season and i see this a problem both for the horses and for the prgramme in general.
Fifa like to through their weight around its about time someone stood up to them. Our tradition with regards the ROTHMANS JULY is part of our country. The stories that come of of that great race either Syd Lairds story or Terrence Millards story derserves to be told. And it deserves to be told to millions , so imvho GC should have said FUCK you fifa. we are proud of our race ,in our city and we want the WHOLE world to see it. I am sure fifa would have eventually relelnted, even if it just meant another suitcase to a delegate or 2 from the carribean.

Most businesses or ventures fail, because we think with our hearts and not our brains.
Everyone wanted the 2010 soccer to be a financial success.
Was a great emotional success when we learned that we would be the host in 2010
Failing to be a financial success, will result in a disaster for FIFA, and AFRICA.
FIFA stuck their necks out, allowed the voting and the suitcases to swing the vote towards AFRICA.
For various reasons, other than financial reasons.
FIFA never expected the wold economy to have meltdown by november 2008, hence the first FIFA AFRICA world cup, looked a financial viable venture at the time.
Putting aside our hearts, and allowing our brains to make a few rational decisions based on the facts at hand, a different picture starts to emerge than the picture we painted for ourselves by 2004.
Based on the fact's at hand,
gathered from the CONFED CUP,
airline sales,
retrenchments world wide,
the discovery of the banckrupt "GENERATION Y",
the unemployement numbers rising,
credit cards sales by banks world wide that are dropping, we need to repaint the picture and do it fast.
Like in the construction phases of the various staduims in RSA, the GAUTRAIN and many more projects, we had to rationalise and paint new pictures on a monthly basis.
Pictures that are watered down, each time we paint the new picture.
less income and more expenses.
perhaps we are still at break even.
are we still looking at these figures as painted in 2004.
if not, lets paint a new picture..
perhaps we are not going on the QE2 on a 3 month cruise..but have to settle for a day at the VAALDAM on a house boat...
800,000 x $100 for booze
800,000 x $160 for gambling
800,000 x $125 for food at the game
now looking at 250,000
sums looks different then..
remember..it only one month..then its over..
remember..the guy selling hamburgers at the staduim is for the day of the game only...not 24/7
