Grey Cheyne is the perfect example of a jockey 'come good'.It took him a long time to get there, but he has improved year-on-year and is now a top jockey imo.He makes very few mistakes and puts his mounts into the race, giving them every chance to win. That's what seperates Marcus from the rest,he makes few errors, gives every horse a strong ride and rides them the whole way to the line.

I have spent a lot of time with the jocks when I was younger, and their biggest problem is temptation.Drugs, booze and women all lead to their downfall. If they are any good they start making money at a young age and unless they are kept grounded they become egotistical and that's where the problems start.

Many start of well and finish up in the trash can,and vice versa. To say that young mister Curling will make it is a very early call.He has ridden 5 winners in nearly two years, admittedly they have all come in the last 4 months so he is probably on an upward curve, but it's hardly a resume to make fantastical claims about. It has clearly taken him nearly a full 2 years to strengthen up enough to start riding winners, and now that he has he is putting the -4 claim to good use.

He has a long way to go.

RYAN CURLING...

Brilliant chap...rides to win...i was first owner in Natal to give him all rides on my babies...battled to get a break...at work every morning at five. Rides work for most trainers...couldn't get rides but he's travelling now and getting rides.
His good nature, feet firmly on the ground and a positive bullish attitude...

PS: RODE MY COLT AT GREYVILLE IN JULY, HORSE SLIPPED AND HE BROKE HIS TOE AGAINST STARTING STALLS BUT STILL GAVE HIS ALL OUT TO WIN AND DIDN'T SHOW THE PAIN HE WAS IN WHEN ARRIVED BACK IN PARADE RING...GUTSY BOY!!!!

He's dad also very impeccable man...trying to get the young chap in Joburg to ride and get more opportunities...easier to fly to venues from joburg as to from natal.

GO RYAN ME BOY!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's so true Justanotherpunter.

I spend my time with 2 jockeys, guys my age, from 1981 till 1991.

Wine, woman and song were our biggest distraction...
not that we could do anything..we were too drunk....

unfortunately, the one jockey passed away..
our paths started splitting by 1986/7 due to drugs..

both, were the top 2 or jockeys in TRANSVAAL at the time...
both, were mostly carded to ride fav then...

looking back..
the sad part..the bookies got to them..
we won fortunes..
by fortunes I mean..some weeks R300K..

we won PA's..3000 times...1000 for each..
the longest winning streak on PA's....19 times in a row..Allen Levin bookmaker at the time will confirm...
least the PA's paid during that 19 run streak..R13.90..

the more we won, the worse they started riding..for various reasons..

the guy that passsed away, died a poor man.
the other is making a comeback..doing fine so far..

the fact remains...
ask us, were is the money, we made from racing..
we cannot show you a cent today...

the money I made, was from working as IT contractor and property.
if it was not for that, i would be broke too..
gambling money wants to be spend..not to be invested..
I don't know why..it is just like that..

We have many memories of what we did.
flew around the globe with gambling money..
bought te most expensive wine..
ate at the best restaurants..
stayed on Islands for months..
bought the most expensive gifts..
romanced the most stunning girls..
driven rolls royce's...
BUT NEVER SAVED A CENT OF THE GAMBLING MONEY..HAD TO BE SPEND..

REALITY CHECK..

these new jockeys also have friends like me, their age, and the process repeats itself again..

Striker should be worth > R100m with the skill set he has.
If he was in another industry and were blessed with the same level of skills for that industry, he would be a CEO, earning >R8m per year, have a share portfolio of +R100m, and a pension worth millions.

EASY COME...EASY GO..

Read the article in this weeks SP about Brandon Morgenrood,a perfect example of what I am talking about. He is relatively young,so he's got a chance to make a go of it still.A good example of a rider with talent gone bad,and now maybe good again.

Time will tell.

he is very talented and will make his country proud. The point about Curling is his IMPROVEMENT that I have seen.I'll never forget him being over the moon when riding in a workriders race aboard a squib for my stable. He took a ride for us as an appy and as I was the only one in the ring (trainer away at Sibiya) I gave him his instructions. He followed to the letter and gave feedback that was honest and fair. I have not said that he is a potential star but his enthusiasim will see him through - as long as he is given a chance he will make a jockey(as far as I know he is older than many of the other lads as is Mansour - perhaps this is a lesson for the Jockey club - Up the age of the appies and get them to complete school first to cut down on costs and to ensure that those in the Academy are more mature and are joining because they wish to ride not because Uncle Jimmy wants an inside edge to catch his R6 PA - jockeys are not Olympic Gymnasts that need to sart at 6 years old so they can be blown out at 18)
