PHUMELELA MEDIA RELEASE
SUBJECT: Peermont Group to sponsor Charity Mile
DATE: Sunday 27 September 2009
RELEASED BY: Phumelela Gaming and Leisure Limited
Phumelela, the JSE-listed horseracing and tote betting company, is delighted to announce that the Peermont Group will sponsor the Charity Mile November Handicap to be run over 1600m at Turffontein on Saturday 7 November.
The race will be titled the Peermont Emperors Palace Charity Mile and will be the headline event at a 12-race meeting that will launch night racing at Turffontein. The meeting is provisionally scheduled to begin at 1.05pm with the last two races being run under lights.
This year’s Charity Mile will be a glorious event with top racehorses and famous people coming together under the banner of the Peermont Group in aid of charity.
In less than two minutes R550 000 will be given away to charity! Each of the 16 participating charities will be represented by a runner in the Charity Mile and the finishing order of the runners will determine how much each charity wins. The charity represented by the winner of the race will bank a massive R100 000!
“Phumelela is delighted to welcome the Peermont Group as the headline sponsor of the event,” said Phumelela General Manager Marketing & Communications Robert Garner. “Details of the charities, celebrities and other elements of the day will be released in due course.”
Bob Yearham, Chief Operating Officer of Emperors Palace, said: “The relationship that Peermont has built up with the racing industry can only be enhanced further through this initiative and we look forward to a long and successful partnership.”
The Peermont Group annually invests over R22 million in Corporate Social Investment and responsibility programmes, including education, skills development and community upliftment in partnership with stakeholders including local government and leading institutions. The group also places particular emphasis on uplifting communities in close proximity to its operations.
* Monde Tabata, chairman of the Peermont Children’s Trust, and Emperors Palace COO Bob Yearham, as well as Phumelela Sales Executive Clyde Basel, will be interviewed about the Peermont Emperors Palace Charity Mile on Inside Racing on Tellytrack (channel 232 DStv) at 20h00 on Monday night 28 September.
