Sorry guys, just in case you missed the detail.
Achievers Day brings new blood to racing
MORE than 600 people aged between 18 and 35 will be special guests at the Racing Association’s Achievers Day at Turffontein on September 12.
The race day aims to expose successful young people to the thrills of horseracing – to encourage them to become racing fans and horse owners.
And 19 of the guests will become instant owners in an exciting on-course lucky draw for membership of a new syndicate to race a filly.
Achievers Day is the brainchild of the RA marketing team, consisting of director Peter Naidoo and Steve Blunden, who have arranged a number of sponsorships for the event and a full programme of entertainment.
The invited guests – young professionals, business people and students – will be hosted in the Turffontein Room and will be treated to welcoming champagne, lunch and wine. They will hear talks by jockeys, trainers and celebrities, and a Miss RA beauty pageant will be held.
The RA and Phumelela are the main backers of the day, while the other sponsors are courier firm Overnight Logistics, brokerage Global Trader, fast-food chain Choose A Burger, Recall Security, Eric Smith, The Alchemy stud, the Thoroughbred Breeders Association and the National Horse Racing Authority.
“The emphasis will be on a quality racing experience,” said Naidoo.
“We at the RA are excited at the very enthusiastic response we’ve had to the idea and I hope we can make Achievers Day an annual event at Turffontein.
“It’s an initiative that should also be taken up at every racing centre in the country,” he added.
“There is an urgent need to bring a new breed of achievers into South African racing, to become its lifeblood of the future.”
Naidoo said he’d been inspired to stage Achievers Day by his travels to racecourses in other parts of the world – such as Hong Kong, Dubai and Australia – where up to 30% of the crowds at race meetings are aged under 30 and bring a youthful vitality to proceedings.
He said he, on behalf of the RA, would be very happy to provide guidance and advice to aspirant young owners that might emerge from Achievers Day – such as helping them with buying thoroughbreds, selecting trainers, insurance, setting realistic expectations and budgeting for a horse’s career.
Naidoo said the only criterion for selection for the guest invitations was no previous involvement in racing.
The 19 individuals whose names are drawn on Achievers Day will each get a 5% share of the racing career of a filly leased from The Alchemy stud. The remaining 5% share will go to a syndicate manager – to be nominated by the sponsors – who will have the requisite experience and knowledge to administer the operation.

I'll be happy if you need an aspirin or two on Sunday! The aim is to see racing as an entertainment vehicle that could grow into a hobby in the future. Main thing is to enjoy the day and have an open mind!

Mr H make sure your young achievers see and are made aware of both sides of racing mate..the good which is rare and the bad which is often before they invest their hard earned money on racehorses instead of property or their own businesses.
Otherwise an excellent RA initiative.

JOHN Vos has been selected as trainer of the racehorse that will be the exciting prize in a lucky draw on Achievers Day at Turffontein on September 12.
The draw will be made among 600 special guests at the race day, and the 19 winners will form the ownership syndicate of the filly – each with a 5% share. A 20th share will be held by a syndicate administrator, to be nominated by the race day sponsors.
The filly will be leased from The Alchemy Stud and its training and keep will be sponsored.
Vos (pictured) is one of the country’s up-and-coming young trainers who, from modest beginnings a couple of years ago, has emerged to register winner after winner on the Highveld tracks. His stables are at the Turffontein Training Centre in Johannesburg, making it easy for new owners that live in the city to get to see their horse in training work.
The lucky draw forms part of the excitement of Achievers Day, which aims to expose a cross-section of successful young people to the thrills of horseracing and encourage them to become racing fans and horse owners.

A Miss RA beauty pageant carries a first prize of a R10 000 photographic portfolio from Colin Hall Photography, plus cash, and a second prize of a two-night stay at Emerald Casino.
Among other prizes on offer is another two-night stay at Emerald Casino for the best-dressed couple. The fashion theme for the day is “Dress for Success”.
The RA and Phumelela are the main backers of the day, while the other sponsors are courier firm Overnight Logistics, brokerage Global Trader, fast-food chain Choose A Burger, Hebco Africa Waterproofing, Eric Smith, The Alchemy stud, the Thoroughbred Breeders Association, the National Horse Racing Authority and an anonymous donor on behalf of Sanca.
It is hoped that Achievers Day will become an annual event on the racing calendar.
