El Picha is king of the Charity Turf Challenge
Racing SA PRESS RELEASE:
THUNDERING Jet’s failure to find a place in the Gr1 Canon Gold Cup put paid to any hopes that William Venters would catch El Picha in the last leg of the 2009 Charity Turf Challenge.
The KwaZulu-Natal-based racing pundit’s two entries finished 15 points clear of the field. Accepting the winner’s memento from Racing South Africa’s CEO Peter Gibson, the man behind El Picha was finally revealed as Vinesh Jeewanlall. He took home the grand prize worth R100 000!
Western Province Owners & Trainers chairman Rodney Dunn came with a late surge to snatch third position on the log from Venters with his shrewd selection of Canon Gold Cup winner Mokaro. While ruing what might have been had two of Rodney’s selections not fallen by the wayside (Rebel King and Dancer’s Daughter), the Dunns family nevertheless enjoyed a fabulous competition – winning part of the standalone July Day prize as well as one of the many spot prizes offered along the way.
The horses that scored points on the last day of the competition were: Mokaro 15, Bill Of Rights 10, Rudi Rocks 5, Mother Russia 10, River Jetez 7 and Outcome 5.
The lucky spot prize winners this past weekend were The Allisons and Dell Boy 1 who each won a R500 betting voucher with the compliments of Neil Cameron.
Peter Gibson said: “This year we saw an increase of over 350% in entries received, which allowed us to grow the pot to R100 000 worth of prizes to the overall winner!”
One objective of the Charity Turf Challenge is to raise funds for the African Horse Sickness (AHS) Trust, which has played a pivotal role in raising awareness of the disease as well providing an early warning system – an essential tool in assisting with disease control in South Africa. According to the conditions of the competition, the Trust will benefit to the tune of R30 000.
Racing South Africa is grateful to the numerous co-sponsors, who included Alistair Wybrow, Betting World, Canon, David van der Vyver, Grant Felix (Hillcrest Tattersalls), Dave Laverack (Kruger Racing), Marshall’s World Of Sport, Morris and Bradley Vee, Neil Cameron, Rob Sinclair, Clive Unsworth (Shelley Beach Tattersalls), the Sporting Post, Trevor Fourie and Val Grantham.
A big thank you to those providing the background support: Racing SA staff and contractors, Gold Circle’s IT and audit departments and Tellytrack presenters for accommodating spot prize draws and competition updates.
However, without the support of the legion of horseracing fans in South Africa, there would be no Charity Turf Challenge. Our aim is to see the prize fund continue to grow to a value that is impossible to resist, so watch the press for news of the next exciting Charity Turf Challenge.
