Scotia's notebook.

Good evening to you all and the good news is after a week at the gym, Scotia feels like a new man, the bad news is that so does Mrs S, it would appear I have become even more hyperactive.

The heading "Notebook" have you seen the movie?, worth a watch but as you get older it becomes scary!
Just imagine reading the Sporting Post and Computerform for the Pick 6 and by the time you have got to the last leg, you have forgotten what you fancied in the first.

Just remembered what I was going to talk about, I found an old diary or notebook in one of the briefcases when looking for my Will. It had three main topics, Horses, Music and Females, wont say much about the later, but growing up in Edinburgh in the late sixties and early seventies and not having the 33 kilos extra and a full head of hair was rather magic! Auld Reekie had not invented aids at that time which was also an added bonus.

The music was also something else, had the pleasure of seeing Led Zeppelin, Jethro Tull, Crosby Stills and Nash, Bowie, Stones, Who, Free, Four Tops, Temptation, Fleetwood Mac etc, "live", plus we had the Beatles, Doobie Bros etc, etc, etc,
We were spoilt for choice and if I consider my top 20 songs today are probably the same as they were 40 years ago, as Don McLean would say "the day the music died!
In addition it was the era of Hippies, Mods and Rockers and yes I was a Mod, Lambretta scooter with 20 mirrors and wore a suit to the dancing, magic times.
Also dangerous times, where the fastest game in the Irish pubs was "pass the parcel".

You might ask what has this got to do with horses, well the front page of the diary had notes on my favorite horses and reading back, it was always Mill Reef for me, it did get beat by Brigadier Gerard in the 2,000 gns, and possibly up to a mile was the faster horse, but if you consider the overall performance it had to be Mill Reef. Not to forget the great Nijinsky winning the triple crown and then being piped in the Arc, truly great memories from a great time growing up, if you have a couple of spare days give me a shout.
It must have been a hard call for the owners of Sea the Stars not to make history and go for the easier option of the St Leger rather than the Eclipse, Arc, Breeders Cup etc? I am sure its all about beating the best and the potential stud value and I would rather win the Arc than the St Leger.

As far as this weekend we have the Grand Lodge function at the big T, where I have taken a table and will probably have to give a few tips for the once a year racegoers, so any inputs would be helpful from all you shrewdies? I must say when I went to the private box at Musselburgh racetrack, they had the track commentator (I type of Molly) going from box to box giving his selections and telling us the substantial punts taken in the "bookies ring", an excellent touch and worth a consideration for our local racing when you have a party of future potential racegoers.
"bookies ring", can also explain what that was to punters that have only been going to the track for the last 10 years.

I will be tipping JJ for Friday for an e.w. but will have to step up to top gear to give the worthy fav Scenic Blast and Paco Boy a race, but again all the best for the connections.

I should be on a diet with the gym work, but have to admit the sauna gives you a thirst, I popped into the local Portuguese's and could not make my mind up and settled for a few double Bacardi's with a touch of lime and a "can" of zero coke, which lasted the 4 drinks, plus a Prego and chips with 2 glasses of dry white, so I am getting there gradually.

Good punting and may your God be with you.

Scotia

Zepplin rocks. What was good back then is as good today. You will battle to find a singer as good as Robert Plant anywhere in todays times.

Would you have been part of the gangs that used to meet at Portobello beach for a square up?

Hibby was more a lover than a fighter, but yes when we pitched in our thousands the lads were using chains and belts, no knifes allowed, decent bunch of lads.

Yip Hibby, that was the plan 20 mods against one rocker and if we were under pressure used to bring in another 20

Scotia I bought a Jimmy paige Robert Plant album a few years back - Walking into Clarksdale. Definitely lost a bit of high note shine but still top class.

I bought the greatest hits Christmas release in 2007. It had a DVD included. The man had a set of pipes in his youth an could play a mean Harmonica. I play a bit of harmonica and played in a garage band and this is where the love for Zeppelin came from

Do yourselves a favour a get hold of a copy of the Led Zeppelin movie The Song Remains The Same. Although it was shot in the mid 70's it has just been re-released in Blue Ray format and now looks as if it was shot last week rather than 33 years ago.

For those of you who don't know ( or have not yet bought a Blue Ray DVD player ) a Sony Playstation 3 also doubles as a Blue Ray player.

Also a topclass Who DVD re-mastered in Blue Ray entitled The Who at Kilburn 1977. To say nothing of the more recent and absolutely brilliant retrospective Who DVD entitled Amazing Journey.

Yet probably the very best DVD ( in terms of sheer musical quality ) that I have bought recently is Procol Harum ( with only Gary Brooker from the original lineup ) performing live with the National Danish Concert Orchestra in 2006. Superb.

Thanks Garrick I am going to the shop to make a plan, plus might grab a bit Gary Moore?
I am sure if I buy the lot, the salesman might turn "a whiter shade of pale"
