Rebel King to stand at Klawervlei Stud
15 years 11 months ago“In the right place at the right time” is how Karel Miedema describes Rebel King’s pedigree. He summarises his assessment of the Cape ’s newest stallion acquisition as “when it works, it works”. Rebel King is the stallion chosen by the highly successful Captain Al syndicate as most worthy of the reinvestment of their well earned profits and he is on his way to Klawervlei right now – fully syndicated. Always an innovative and passionate bunch of breeders, the Captain Al shareholders decided to pool their profits and reinvest in a stallion they deemed most likely to serve their interests in future and invited some friends to join them.
Rebel King is due to arrive at Klawervlei next week to take up residence as stable mate of the phenomenal Captain Al and his own champion sire National Emblem. He enters stud as a much needed source of precocious speed in our industry.
The “quest for soundness and speed” is a time old adage. Throughout the ages speed influences like Bahram, Blenheim II, Court Martial, Gold Bridge, Gratitude, Star kingdom, Tudor Melody, Vilmorin and others have played a significant role in upgrading the fortunes of those that invested in them. More recently, breeding with record setting local speed merchants who demonstrated top class ability at 2 years and trained on soundly like Harry Hotspur, Royal Affair, Damask, Brer Rabbit etc proved to be a very wise investment. Local hero Harry Hotspur set the standard by which speed sires had to be judged in SA statistics for many years. He rewrote the record books on juvenile performances and has become a significant influence in our stud book.
Rebel King was described as “one of the best looking horses in training” – he was tough and genuine and raced sound from 2 to 5 years – that’s four years at the highest level. He was undefeated in 3 starts at 2yrs and set a new race record in the Gr2 (formerly Gr1) SA Nursery. He won the Gr1 Cape Flying Championship in near race record time of 57.98 sec, a full second faster than serial champion sire Jet Master. Rebel King won or placed in 8 Gr1 events. He retires as a winner of 8 races incl Gr1 and over R2m. He won or placed in 17 Graded races of which 8 were Gr1’s.
He has a fantastically sound pedigree; his sire National Emblem was ARCSA Champion of 1995 and Champion Sire of 2yo’s in 2004 – he is currently a “top 3 sire” in SA. National Emblem is a proven source of speed and precocity with no less than 3X Equus Champion Sprinter Nhlavini, Equus Champion 2yo Carnadore, dual Gr1 winner Buy and Sell, National Spirit, Rip Curl, Emblem of Liberty, Fez, Decorated Hero etc.
His first three damsires are all Champion Sire's and Champion Broodmare Sires. His damsire Badger Land is has become a major force as a broodmare sire in SA breeding and 2nd damsire Foveros was many times champion sire and one of the most important broodmare sires in the modern stud book - two of the greatest sources of soundness and class in our mare population today. 3rd damsire is Royal Prerogative was 13x Champion Broodmare Sire in SA.
His winning dam Cousin Linda is half sister to Gr1 performers Lucy’s Lad and Cousin John; has 100% winners from 3 to race and produced Uncle Tommy, the 2009 National Yearling Sales topper at R2.4m. This is the family of champion Golden Taipan as well as Lyrical Linda (Gr1 winner), Duc du Orleans, Count du Barry etc.
Rebel King stands at Klawervlei Stud at R10 000 (deposit R2000 and balance at live foal).
