JULY: Mike Miller

Summerveld trainer Mike Miller has his second Vodacom Durban July runner when the mare Outcome lines up in the big race on Saturday, July 4.

Miller’s first runner was Eminent who scraped into the final field in 1999 after winning the Listed Michael Roberts Handicap and on the big day finished 14th behind El Picha.

Eminent was owned by the same owner as Outcome, Steve Sturlese, who is thrilled to be having his second July runner.

The five-year-old mare, whose ten wins include last season’s Garden Province Stakes (Gr 1), have all come at Greyville Racecourse, will be ridden by Gerrit Schlechter, who will be hoping for his second July winner having won on Eyeofthetiger in 2006.

Miller was very happy with Outcome’s draw of nine which he felt was just about perfect for her.

“She tends to come out the gates a bit sluggishly, but from this draw she won’t have to deal with horses running across her like those drawn on the inside often have to and she could end up in a nice midfield position. The July can be a rough race, especially if you have an inside draw, so from that point of view this draw is ideal too. Fillies hate being bumped and bored and will drop the bit if it gets too rough. I’ve never seen a filly take a really hard knock and pick up the bit again. Having said that, she is probably the biggest filly I’ve trained so whoever bumps her will have their work cut out.”

Miller said that Outcome had small feet for a big filly so doesn’t enjoy wet going.

“The drier the better,” he said.

Outcome will work in the company of The Big Ask in the July Gallops at Greyville on Thursday.

“We will give her a good workout, a nice pipe opener, over about 1400m,” he said.

Miller believed Pocket Power would be hard to beat, but re-iterated what he said last week that he doesn’t feel Outcome is far behind River Jetez.

“Wherever she is we should be right there”.
