Benny Dean gets his wings
Benny Dean pictured here on Keen Warrior at Summerveld
Long-time professional work-rider Benny Dean was granted a conditional jockey’s license yesterday (14May) for the first time by the National Horseracing Authority (NHA), some 27 years after his tenure at the Jockey’s Academy. A jubilant Dean received the news via telephone today from NHA Chief Executive Rob De Kock and will sign his papers next week. Due to the exceptional circumstances of the application, his jockey license is conditional and carries a probation period of 6 months before coming up for review.
Back in ‘82 Dean dropped out of the Jockey’s Academy only a few months shy of completing his 5 year apprenticeship. He was indentured to trainer Colin Lee and had been race riding as an appie for about 8 months at the time of leaving. Barring a few jobs unrelated to horse racing, Dean has been a work rider for most of his career, having worked in SA, Saudi Arabia, the UK and Kuwait.
Dean is highly regarded for his horseman skills and is a daily sight on the training tracks every morning at Summerveld. He’s no stranger to the winner’s enclosure either having won his fair share of work-riders' races in recent years and looks set to make his presence felt here in KZN as a jockey. Incidentally, he rides his last race as a work-rider this Sunday at Clairwood )race1) and is in with a great chance of departing the amateur ranks a winner. All the best to Benny Dean, see him soon on a KZN racetrack near you.
Thanks again LEON and INTERBET
