Mine That Bird is a 50-1 KentuckyDerby stunner
MINE THAT BIRD produced one of the biggest shocks in the history of the Kentucky Derby on Saturday with a 50-1 victoryin the 135th running of America's most celebrated race.
The unconsidered longshot came from virtually last to first with a dynamic stretch run under Calvin Borel to score going away from well-fancied Pioneerof The Nile at a rain-sodden Churchill Downs.
Godolphin suffered more Kentucky Derby disappointment, with UAE Derby winner Regal Ransom finishing eighth and Desert Party 14th.
However, they fared better than dismal favourite Friesan Fire, who faded to beat only one home in 18th position.
Mine That Bird, a champion two-year-old in Canada last year, is a gelded son ofBirdstone trained by little-known Chip Woolley.
Woolley drove his horsebox to Louisville from New Mexico, where Mine That Bird had finished only fourth on his previous outing at lowly Sunland Park.
Borel was the hero of the hour as he became the first rider since Jerry Bailey in 1993 to complete the Kentucky Oaks/Derby double, having partnered the brilliant Rachel Alexandra to a stunning 20-length victory in the fillies' Classic 24 hours earlier.
Nicknamed 'Calvin Bo-Rail' for his fondness for hugging the inside line, the popular Borel was winning his second Derby after Street Sense in 2007.
Street Sense, though, was a major fancy, whereas Mine That Bird , who recorded a time of 2m02.66s, was a totally unconsidered longshot.
But in filthy conditions, Borel produced almost a carbon copy of his paint-scraping performance on Street Sense with a typically daredevil ground-saving ride from the rear.
Mine That Bird was threaded through horses on the home turn before an explosive move to shoot through a needle-eye gap on the inner to hit the front just inside the final furlong.
He scored by six-and-three-quarter lengths from Pioneerof The Nile, a nose ahead of Musket Man in third with Papa Clem a further head back in fourth.
"I did a Street Sense ride," said an emotional Borel, who was crying and screaming as he brought his upset winner back tothe winners' circle.
"I learnt by Street Sense, being so patient with these three-year-olds," he added. "They can only go so fast and so far.
"So I sat back and had a good trip and when I hollered at him he just went on.
"I was about 15 or 20 lengths back early on but I had a lotta horse - I knew I was going to win at the three-eighths pole as long as I could find my way through."
Winning trainer Woolley is on crutches after breaking his right leg in a motorcycle accident and hobbled around a muddy Churchill Downs.
"It's wonderful," he said from underneath a massive black cowboy hat.
"It's a feeling I've never had before and I think Calvin Borel's the best. He rode a huge race.
"They'll know me now, won't they?"
>>Ante-post favourite I Want Revenge was scratched on the morning of the race because of soreness in his near-fore ankle

Two fantastic races! Great to see a $9500 horse from 'nowhere' beat all the big guns.

The current connections bought him privately after he won a Gr 3 in Canada last season, presumably for much more than the $9500 he'd made as a yearling! By the way, his sire Birdstone is the horse that denied Smarty Jones the 2004 Triple Crown.

Mine That Bird on target for Preakness Stakes
USA: The field for the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico on May 16 is beginning to take shape, with shock Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird committed to the race by trainer Chip Woolley on Monday.
"He jogged on Monday and looks good, so we'll go on to the Preakness," said Woolley. "We let the horse tell us what to do."
Woolley was still amazed at what his horse had done on Saturday in what was one of the biggest upsets in US racing history.
"It's an unbelievable feeling," he said. "It's actually a little bit hard to get my head around. It's hard to believe that we came here and won this thing.
"We had talked about being eight to ten lengths from the lead but when he got anihilated leaving the stalls and got shuffled that far back I wasn't too keen on our chances.
"But the horse responded and Calvin [Borel] did a super job of riding the horse. So we're just lucky to have been there."
Fourth-placed Papa Clem is headed to Baltimore, according to his trainer Gary Stute, whose father Mel won the Preakness with beaten Derby favourite Snow Chief.
"He may go back to the track here but I want to get him to Pimlico and have a work over the track before the Preakness.
"With a little luck, he could have been second in the Derby," said Stute.
Third-placed Musket Man is a likely Preakness starter, too.
"I am sure the the owners are looking at it but we will give it a few days," said trainer Derek Ryan.
Bob Baffert could send Pioneerof The Nile to the Preakness as well.
"He looks good this morning but I want to give him a couple of days and see how he comes out of it.
"If he had won I thought he had a shot at the Triple Crown. He can get the distance and he runs his race every time," said Baffert.
The two Godophin horses, eighth-placed Regal Ransom and 14th-placed Desert Party, are back at Belmont Park, with neither being considered for the Preakness.
New players for the Preakness will include Big Drama, most recently second after being disqualified from first in the Swale Stakes at Gulfstream Park on March 28.

Great stuff Barry, but looking at the trainer and owner on the home page, would not like to take the race away on an objection? lol
