CHARITY TURF CHALLENGE 2009
16 years 1 month ago
“The most exciting competition ever launched in South African racing!” Or, so said Andrew Bonn in a TV interview with Deez Dayanand when discussing the 2009 Charity Turf Challenge hosted by Racing South Africa.
Based on the fantasy football concept, this year’s competition offers a mouthwatering guaranteed R100 000 first prize and kicks off on Friday, 8 May, with the running of the Gr.2 Drill Hall Stakes.
The aim is to select the team of 10 horses you feel are most likely to succeed in races run during the period of the KZN Champions Season which ends on Saturday, 1 August, featuring the Gr.1 Canon Gold Cup. The cost is R50 per entry and multiple entries are welcomed – the more entries, the bigger the eventual prize fund!
Leading up to the start of the Charity Turf Challenge, racing journalists Dees Dayanand and Chad Cooke will be visiting various TAB Outlets in the KZN area to explain the mechanics of the competition and to make entry forms available to racing enthusiasts. You can catch Chad and Dees at the following TAB’s:
Bayview on Thursday 30 April from 4.30pm
Starwood on Tuesday 5 May
Kingsmead on Thursday 7 May
Racing South Africa CEO Peter Gibson said: “Whilst luck invariably plays a role, this competition is really a test of one’s knowledge of the racing game and cracking the bonus points on offer is key. Good luck!”

I believe the stables have a far better chance in this competition as they are aware of their charges itinerary.... but is a cool idea nonetheless.

Good idea, but I agree with ismikle; the stables have an advantage in knowing which horses are going to go for the qualifying races; would be great if one could get hold of the same 'inside info' before next Friday.
Will have a go nevertheless

Although the concept is great and really is a long time coming,I don't really like the format.
The R50 entry fee makes it an exclusive competition. Why not make a competition like this available to all punters.Surely Gold Circle could budget for something like this, even though times might be tough. The concept of allowing people to enter as many times as they wish just means the likelyhood of a big spender winning are obviously greatly enhanced.I understand that they are doing this to try and boost the winners pot,but a competition similar to the Godolphin competition is a far fairer concept, where the person whose skill in picking only ten runners and having only one chance to enter means the cream really does rise to the top.Why not make this a real talking point in the totes, where every man has entered and will discuss his entry with his mates every time they have runners.
I really like the idea.I just think that once again a brilliant marketing opportunity has gone amiss.
