Betting Claims
16 years 1 month ago
Does anyone know why the odds on a horse in SA are plumetted by the bookmakers when someone takes a bet or double into a horse to win R25k..ie Euro 2k
Why is it R25k and not R50k and why are the odds reduced so drastically?
I thought bookmaking round the world wasa risky bussiness but it seems that here in SA they have covered themselves so well that they have taken most of the risk out.
Also why are no international bookmaker cos allowed in SA..ie ladbrokes, betfair etc?

Oscar I agree with you fully, claims on horses should be at least 50k.
To double claim a horse from 50/1 to 33/1 and then from 33/1 to 20/1 takes R1,300. Hardly a large sum of money and can be very misleading to the betting public as this is indicated "that a flood of money came for the horse".

This might sound dumb, but what constitutes a claim???? when we the public see a claim from lets say 50-1 to 33-1 to win r50 000. Does this mean that the person wagered R1000 at 50-1???? or how does it work? and does it matter where you play the bet?
thanks

Hi Russell, a claim is to win R25,000. So to claim a horse at 50/1 you would need to place a bet of 25000/500. Similarly to claim a horse at 5/10 you would need a bet of 25000/50000 to claim the horse. So when horses at longer odds are claimed it is often a reasonably small bet that gets the horse claimed. With regards to first times a claim is to win R10,000, so even less money is required here to claim a first timer.

Imvho half of these reported claims are bullshit bookmakers claims for whatever reason. The poor punters climb in and then the horse drifts back out to where it should be in the first place, resulting in some commentators who should know better reporting that the horse is drifting in the betting.
Better to leave it until the market is formed.
