Lyle Anderson new appointment.
16 years 3 months ago
Lyle Anderson will soon start a new career path being a Stipendiary Steward and the Racing Association caught up with him and asked him a few questions.
RR: What made you decide to become a stipe?
LA: It became clear to me that there is not much future for small trainers in the economic climate.
RR: When do you start your new venture?
LA: I begin on the 1st of March and am really looking forward to it.
RR: How did you get the position?
LA: I had a meeting with Rob De Kock and he offered me the job which I grabbed.
RR: Where will you be based?
LA: I will be in JHB.
RR: How long were you a trainer for?
LA: I was a trainer for 10 years. It was something that I always wanted to be but circumstances changed and I had to look for something else as I am still only 34 years old.

I'm sad to see Lyle leave the training ranks - his horses always looked superb! Good luck to him in his new role - I hope it all works out for him.

Good luck to Lyle, hope it all works out well for him...He is one of the nicest guys in racing.
Feb has laid claim to 3 trainers so far, Lyle Anderson, Ron Phillips and Colin Lee...times are tough and I think about to get tougher for the smaller guy in the game.

What is the RA and Phumelela doing to assist young upcoming trainers ?
Is it not the duty of the school to assist their students ?
Or do these trainers not contribute anything to the game of racing ?
Less trainers + less horses = Less revenue
But who cares , as long as they make millions each week , who gives a shit !!!

Trust me you get no help from anyone in this game especially the trainers... It is trainers who bring owners into the game and keep the owners happy if possible and all we get is a kick up the ass for it! Most of my clients are new owners to the game which I introduced to racing and its been an uphill battle from the begining. Trainers get the ass end of the stick continually but luckyfor some of us we have a fighting spirit and have been blessed with a few good horses and clients who keep us fighting forward.

Sad thing is you cannot even lobby against the powers that be.
If you do not train and run you get no revenue. Its a lose lose situation for trainers and owners.

I remember you well from CT. You've done very well so far.
as you say, I guess it is trainers who bring in new owners, or at least break them in. Owners should be lining up to you if you really believe you should keep them happy.
Over the years I've had horses with a dozen or so trainers and after the honeymoon, I've pretty much turned into an (address to send the bill). I have come to the conclusion that most trainers see owners as a necessary evil which they have to put up with.
I don't think I'm demanding either, seeing as I don't expect to make a profit and all I want is at least one call for every invoice I receive (and as little BS as possible). Needless to say, only one trainer of the dozen-ish has ever achieved that very difficult yardstick. (although only 2 were/are so-called top-10 trainers, would that make a difference?)

Scotia i don't want to jump over your head, but don't you think that we must distribute our first book called 101 excuses why the horse didn't win.
The name of the book can also be called 101 trainers and jockey excuses.
It will be a nice thing to get involved with.
Of course i know Adios will say the first excuse is because it is a Lizard Island.
What do you oke's think?

Trainer to Jockey : " why the hell didnt you take that gap at the 200 and go on to win the race? "
Jockey " because the gap was travelling faster than we were "

What are the best excuses given by a trainer to you for a disapointing run. Here's a couple to start with and what was really meant.
Needs more ground ( Truth - about six feet of ground should suffice )
Educational run ( Truth - It is you and not the horse who should be wiser after the rum )
Should improve next run ( Truth - if it doesn't we're stuffed )
Trainers are most welcome to contribute to this thread.

"needs more ground" "needs gelded" "poor ride by the jockey" "needs blinkers" "remove blinkers" "did not act in going" "going too hard, feeling his joints" " will try over the jumps" "will try Bloemfontien?"
"hangs badly, suggest a piece of led in the left ear", "how do we insert"? "a gun usually works the best"
"sorry but its a piece of shit" "thank you for your honesty"
cheers Mark, keep them coming.

What i am about to write is sad/funny but true.
About 15 years ago myself and some partners took a horse to Andre Kotze. the horse in question had been with Mike Azzie and arrived at Andres yard in imppecable condition and ready to run.
we explained that after its last start the jockey had said "stick blinkers on"
Andre said "blinkers is for moffies"
When asking Andre about feed and supplements we were told " my horses eat miellies and thats that"
we moved on

Will battle to win a race. Will try and sell it as a hack.Couldn't find a buyer. Buys it himself. Wins 3 races with it. Excuse: it had an absess under the hove, and was a rig, only found out later.

This is fact, jockey gets off after the race and says to the trainer."I think you should run this over 1400,as 1600 is too far in my opinion and I would also fit blinkers. The trainer was stunned,Why distance the horse had just run was 1400 and it was wearing blinkers.
This jockey now retired had ridden the July winner that year!!!!
