A GRANDMOTHER has told how she foiled an attempted robbery on an Edinburgh bookmakers – by telling the gun-wielding thief to pose for a photograph.
The 59-year-old, who has diabetes and suffers from heart problems, was only helping out at the Gilmerton shop when the would-be robber burst in.
Despite being alone in the shop, she repeatedly refused to hand over cash to the man, instead reaching for her camera phone and asking him to pose for a picture. The suspect then fled from the shop empty-handed, before she could snap him.
The grandmother-of-four worked in various bookmakers for around 30 years before taking early retirement six years ago.
She now helps out occasionally at Fernieside Racing in Gilmerton, and on Sunday she was covering for regular staff at the Fernieside Crescent shop who wanted to watch the Hibs-Hearts match.
The woman, who asked not to be named, told the Evening News: "It was a quiet day. Everybody was away watching the football and this guy came in. He came up and just looked at me and said what a horrible day it was outside, and I said 'Aye, miserable'.
"He walked along to the end of the counter and I thought he was going to play on the one-armed bandit machine there."
Instead the man reached around the end of the toughened glass security screen, pulled out what appeared to be a weapon, and demanded that she hand over her takings.
She said: "I looked up and he's got this gun facing towards me. It seems silly now but I just looked at him and said 'You're joking'."
She told him the money was locked in the safe, but he demanded that she hand over the cash on the counter.
She recalled: "I just grabbed my phone and I said 'I'll take your photograph instead', and he put his arm up to his face to hide it. He said 'The money off the top', and I said 'Give me a photograph, quick'."
Swearing at her, the man gave up his attempt at robbery and fled.
She said: "It looked like a real gun to me but it happened that fast, I didn't really have time to get scared.
"I got a row from everybody round about me afterwards. It did hit me afterwards and I was shaking a bit, but I would probably still do the same thing again."
Her boss, company partner Gus Brooks, 53, said: "She's very brave – but daft. We instruct everybody to hand the money over in that situation. I was down here 30 minutes afterwards and she was very calm and collected."
Police have appealed for anyone who has information on Sunday's incident to contact them.
