The eagerly anticipated return clash between Vodacom Durban July Champions Pocket Power and Dancer’s Daughter has been put on hold and racing fans will have to wait a little longer before the two meet again. The irony is that they will be in action on the same day at the same racecourse early next year but in different races.
Many hoped that the two would clash in the R1-million L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate (Gr 1) to be run over 1600m at Kenilworth Racecourse on Saturday, 10 January 2009, but trainer Justin Snaith has decided to side-step Pocket Power for now and instead has lined Dancer’s Daughter up for the R1 million TBA Paddock Stakes (Gr 1) to be run over 1800m on the same day.
Both races have attracted high class fields although the presence of the two super stars has scared off some opposition with ten runners in opposition to Pocket Power in the L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate and only eight have stood their ground in the TBA Paddock Stakes.
In the L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate field is Buy And Sell who touched off Pocket Power in the Champions Cup at Clairwood, the final Gr 1 of the 2008 Champions Season where Dancer’s Daughter finished back in fourth. Trainer Sean Tarry’s runner is rated some seven pounds below Pocket Power but will need to be at his very best to get the better of the hometown hero who turned in the ideal preparation when runner-up to stable companion Blue Tiger in the recent WPOTA Diadem Stakes (Gr 2) run over 1200 m. That outing should have sharpened Pocket Power to a fine edge and he is likely to start at very short odds in the L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate.
Also in the Queen’s Plate line-up is the Stan Elley-trained Kapil who is still looking for a win since his return from Dubai, but is a high class performer on his day and has been specifically aimed at this race. The Charles Laird-trained Our Giant is the only upcountry visitor while trainer Mike Bass holds a very strong hand in the race with four runners including Pocket Power.
Justin Snaith will saddle the highly rated Alvaro. Although well beaten by Pocket Power in the Greenpoint Stakes, Alvaro was found to be suffering from a respiratory infection after the race and one can expect a better performance from him this time round.
In the TBA Paddock Stakes, Dancer’s Daughter is rated 12 pounds higher than her closest rivals and if anything, should start at an even shorter price than Pocket Power. However, Dancer’s Daughter does take on some very smart fillies and mares headed by River Jetez who caught the eye when coming with a late rattle to finish second to Dancer’s Daughter in the recent Victress Stakes.
The only three-year-old in the race is last season’s champion Consensual who has yet to get off the mark this term although she has only contested two sprints. Her last outing was in the Diadem Stakes where she finished some six lengths off the winner Blue Tiger but she should much prefer the 1800m trip of the TBA Paddock Stakes.
