Sectional Timing

Bettors that lack the ability to analyze a race without the use of sectional timing are at a distinct disadvantage in being able to handicap the races.

In the United States, Hong Kong and France, sectional timing is available to the hundredth of a second.

In the U. S., we have the timeworn expression that "pace makes the race."

But only by being to have the "fractions" available, is one able to analyze the actual pace of the race.

What are your racing officials waiting for?

"you be the judge" sectional timing or lights? I vote for the lights.

The topic comes up from time to time but there doesn't seem to be any real drive to get it implemented, despite newer, simpler and cheaper technologies being introduced in the USA.

I'm a fan of the concept and would love to see it introduced.

The (re)-introduction of sectional timing would raise the understanding of racing to a much higher level.
What really happens in a race cannot be appreciated without it.

I suggest that Scotia get a pair of binoculars and a stopwatch, and practise sectional timing himself.
After that he'll never vote in favour of lights over sectional timing again - guaranteed.

And Barry, you ask what our officials are waiting for.
They haven't held a stopwatch in their life, and therefore haven't any appreciation of the concept either. It is criminal.

Does anyone have any idea as too the actual costs of said sectional timing?

With the advent of fiber optic's, wireless technology and laptops - there could well be a 'cheap' way of incorporating said timing for a reasonable cost.

And I dare say, there will be a techie out there that with a tad of imagination that could come up with an efficent system - no?

Respectfully, Jim.

We had it installed at Kenilworth once upon a time.

Plattner installed the same system at her training centre.

There was wholesale resistance to the project, from the jocks through to the racecard printing dept. Whole thing died without giving it a chance and the investment flushed.

Sorry Scotia, revealing the insides of racing with sectional times or trying to win at 10pm with lights (not to mention staff and grooms trying to get home before midnight without a BMW)...no contest.

OK guys, you win I just enjoy a good social day at the races and if we had lights at the big T, I could socialize longer! With the horses I have had, don't need sectional timing a calendar is good enough!

Night racing works in certain locales. Turffontein is not one of them.

Night racing at Turffontein won't work for me either, I have donated enough already, don't want to donate another car.
