Any explanations?

The massive R169 091.40 dividend for the PA at Fairview yesterday was based on the folowing live tickets going into the last leg:
Horse Tickets
1.....1.01
2.....2.07 (Second)
3.....6.22 (Tote Favourite)
4.....1.12 (Winner)
5.....4.44
6.....3.47
7.....0.42
8.....3.98
9.....2.83
10....0.30
11....0.15 (Third)
12....30.02
13....0.22
14....0.16
15....0.01
Total 56.42 tickets: Winning tickets 1.12+2.07+0.15 = 3.19
The No. 12 horse, Stara Mennica (14 runs, 1 win, 2 places) carried over 50% of the live tickets, but as its form suggested ran unplaced. It was priced up at 50/1, but shortened to 33/1 at the start.
Can anyone enlighten me as to why so many punters, having managed to navigate the first six bombshells in the PA, put their faith in this rank outsider? Doesn't make any sense to me!!

It's possible that most/all those tickets belonged to one person. Maybe someone was running many times going into that last leg, or had a straight line ticket 30 times.

They just played random numbers, or a dream, or a birthday...etc.
They negotiated the first 6 legs on "no hopers" based on the same as above...
That's my theory and I'm sticking to it!
Brian, I hope you receive a reasonable explanation from somebody who actually knows what they are talking about!
Cheers

Thanks Guys,
Actually on reflection I think you are probably both correct.
The "no name" punter probably took his/her lucky numbers in a straight line PA 30 times. Poor sod managed to get through 6 legs with big upsets but then blew out in the last leg. This would explain the 30.02 tickets on No. 12., as realistically only 0.02 (2%) tickets should have been riding on this horse at the odds of 33/1.
