K B monkeying around

Kevin Shea has proved himself a world class jock and seems a seriously good guy. He comes across as an extremely professional jock in his interveiws and they are always worth listening to.

But his antics on Rudra at the end of the Summer Cup makes him look like an over exited appy. I wish he would cut that out

I read he got 1 x week suspension for " saluting / waving " before the post. But he will be able to ride in the feature race in CPT whis coming week end.

I suppose that is a lot cheaper than a 20 grand fine.

the saluting the crowd was only for their benefit, as stated before, in other countries that sort of showmanship is encouraged. I would rather ask him about his not so great ride on Sweet Sanette

clintto, unfortunately Sweet Sanette was unsettled in the starting stalls, then backed out & was BUNDLED in again.
Then she proceeded to loose 2 - 3 lengths imo - you can't give start over a sprint. I don't think you can blame KB for that ride ( I'm speaking from my back pocket as well - thank God i never took 6/10..... cost me a lot of boubles with Rudra )

elvis, took the same doubles, but at least i got the 15/10. i thought that he might have rushed her to the front to early after losing the ground at the start, but watching it again it appears that she pulled him there.

Emulating Marwing on Horse Chestnut, I enjoyed his salute, well worth it.

For once I am going to side with the stipes!

A couple of years ago KB got into the nasty habit of regularly dropping his hands in a finish and generally showboating. The nett result was a couple of unexpectedly hairy finishes and, if my memory serves me correctly, a race or two lost/nearly lost. Accompanied by a number of rebukes/fines/suspensions.

'Posing' will seem very harmless until the day YOU have your maximum on the horse in question and it is nabbed on the post or, worse still, suddenly shies and unseats the rider - who was busy blowing kisses to the crowd. Trust me - the lynch mob that forms will be very unhappy!

Rather ensure that the jockey is obliged to remain in control and fully focused during the running. He can 'grandstand' all he likes in the post race interview and/or jockey room.

A top trainer in the USA,I think it was D.Wayne Lucas fired a top jockey for standing up and turning sideways to wave. This happened just after the winning post. His reasoning was that the horse having run it's guts out normally change legs and the change in weight distribution cause leg damage.
Perhaps Barry I may know if the above is true.

A jockeys life is hard enpugh without as punters and on lookers having a 5 cents to throw in after a win or loss.
If its gonna be damaging to the horse then fine but lets not forget its these guys at the end of the day who ride and take the risk and if he/she ENJOYED that win so much then he/she has the right to salute and acknowledge the crowd in his happiness.
Done in all sports guys. Lets not be too harsh. They are a great bunch of people with a lot to deal with. Never mind us throwing comments on the side.

I personaly have no problem with the Salute.

It was a big race and inho should be allowed, provided the Jockey has 'control' of the Horse, and having watched the replay many times he was always in control.

However I don't believe that it should be a run of the mill thing.

Maybe a R5,000 donation to the Horse Care Unit for doing it (which should take care of it being 'overused').

Although, if something untoward happens - loses race etc. A 3 month ban and R50,000 fine imposed, again thereby minimising the overuse of said 'salute'.

I believe a bit of 'respectful showboating' can only help 'publicise' the sport to a wider audience which in turn is the way forward imho.

Respectfully, Jim.
