Bridge over Troubled water 💧

Bridge Over Troubled Water

Good morning Clan,

These remain uncertain times in the world 🌍, and with ongoing tensions around the Strait of Hormuz, it certainly feels like we’re all trying to find a bridge over troubled waters.

We’re safely back in Pretoria after a wonderful trip to Hillcrest in KZN. It was fantastic to spend time with family again — though saying goodbye to “Mad Max” was easy. I did attempt to correct a few of his habits, and even tried teaching him poker. That impressed my daughter… although I’m not sure it worked, as he insists on wagging his tail every time he has a good hand!

On a more personal note, plans to move into a retirement village later this year are starting to take shape. It’s a new chapter, and one we’re approaching with positivity. We’re currently looking for the right unit — ideally with a golf cart included. The facilities are excellent: healthcare, a heated pool, cinema, restaurant and even a large braai area where you can book a cremation on a Sunday. A true all-in-one lifestyle offering. I was also told about a “die now, pay later” option — which certainly caught my attention! 🤣

I’m already thinking about adding a few extras to increase the vibe - day at the races,  bingo evenings and quiz nights — sponsored golf cart from Hollywood to run the tote outlet ?

Sporting Thoughts

We’re still hoping to make that long-awaited trip to Scotland after a few setbacks. Timing it with the end of the season would be ideal, especially with Hearts pushing for a strong finish. next weekend Sunday 26th brings the always-heated Edinburgh Derby at Easter Road against Hibs — never one to miss.

In England, things are heating up nicely. Manchester City face a must-win clash against Arsenal. The betting tells its own story, with Arsenal drifting from 1/10 to 6/10 while City shortened to 12/10. The Gunners still sit among the joint favourites for the UEFA Champions League alongside the German contenders.

After last night's games the Germans were certainly the most impressive.

George has increased the Bella Cheeza wine 🍷 shop and needs Arsenal to win to pay for renovations.

Overseas Racing

Newmarket has delivered some top-class action this week, with Double Rush particularly impressive. Today we have Hidden Force and Hassaleh appeal for exotic plays.

There is late drama for Saturday at Newbury with Constitution Hill, who was heavily backed before being scratched. Attention now shifts to the much vaunted Albert Einstein, to recover his reputation athough Ryan Moore’s rides Title Role adds intrigue, and Zavateri could well head the market.

Bow Echo remains prominent for the 2000 Guineas, while Precise leads the way for the fillies.

Up at Ayr, it’s Scottish Grand National time. Delighted that last week’s call — I Am Maximus to win and High Class Hero each-way — delivered nicely. This time, I’m taking a swing at a 20/1 shot, Maximilion, in the big one. Elsewhere, Khrisma looks a solid pick in the hurdle, while Diamond Dealer could run a big race in the chase.

Further afield, Australian sprint star Overpass is Ascot-bound, and it would be exciting to see Ka Ying Rising join the Royal meeting as well.

Local Scene

Back home, Andrew Fortune has returned in fine form. The big question — could See It Again be a July contender and Andrew get the mount?

We’ve got a packed weekend of racing:

Full race cards, expert opinion all daily on the main site .

Friday: Fairview (PE) & Greyville
Saturday: Kenilworth
Sunday: Turffontein
Plus, the National Yearling Sales are drawing plenty of attention.

Final Word

Plenty to look forward to both on and off the track. Stay sharp, stay positive, and as always — keep finding your edge.

Here’s a fitting classic from Simon & Garfunkel to set the tone:

Good punting 👍
