Dettori comes close on South American debut
Frankie Dettori (pictured with Andre Fabre) was out of luck in Argentina on Saturday night
FRANKIE DETTORI was out of luck on his first experience riding in South America, but managed two seconds and a third from his five mounts on Palermo's glittering Argentine Derby-Oaks card on Saturday.
Dettori finished fifth aboard Surf Girl in the fourth race, a conditions race for four-year-old fillies and just missed out in the eighth race when finishing second on John Fulton's debutantOcean Crest ina 6f maiden event contested around one turn.
"The track was very quick, tight sand, but I really enjoyed it," said Dettori. "I didn't have much of a chance in the first, the second filly ran really well, but perhaps I waited a bit too long. The races were good, clean and fair and I had a good time."
In the Oaks, Dettori finished third aboard favourite Cagnotte, whose chances appeared to be compromised by the slow pace race and herinside post.
Oaks winner Miss Match, a big striking daughter of Indygo Shiner, kept to her task and drew clear to win impressively by three lengths under Uruguayan Julio Cesar Mendez.
"In the Oaks, I felt likethe filly, if she had an outside post it would have been a different story, said Dettori.
"She would not face the pressure from the outside and unfortunately we cannot change the draw."
Dettori's ride in the Derby, Balcarce Nov finished eleventh.
The race was won by the Indygo Shiner colt Tecla Shiner, who prevailed by two-and-half lengths from City Banker and Mi Amiguito.
Dettori finished second with his last mountPerpinya in race 14.
The rider was then honoured in the title of the 15th race, which was named the Clasico Irineo Leguizamo - Copa Frankie Dettori.
Dettori has plans to remain in Buenos Aires until Wednesday and was scheduled to attend Sunday´s football match between league leader Boca Juniors and Velez Sarsfield in Buenos Aires.
NOTE!!!!!!!
He is due to travel to South Africa later in the week to compete in a jockeys' tournament in Johannesburg as a member of the European team that will take on South Africa's top riders.

They have 15 races on a card in Argentina? Eish!
Mind you, that presumably leaves them with no need to show cart racing and Ngong...
