PHUMELELA MEDIA RELEASE

SUBJECT: Gilded Minaret out of Summer Cup, other entries for the day

DATE: Wednesday 5 November 2008

RELEASED BY: Phumelela Gaming and Leisure Limited

TRAINER Mike de Kock has pulled Gilded Minaret of the Steinhoff International Summer Cup to be run at Turffontein on Saturday 29 November 2008.
Gilded Minaret was second favourite to win the Charity Mile November Handicap at Turffontein last Saturday but tailed off at the finish. According to De Kock she was coughing after the race and he obviously felt she would not be ready for the R2 million race to be run over 2000m on the standside track.
Meanwhile Oracy, an impressive winner on debut at Turffontein yesterday, is among the nominations for the Unitrans Dingaans (G2) to be run over 1600m on Summer Cup day. The New Zealand-bred son of Zabeel, who coasted home by more than five lengths under Anton Marcus, has been drawn at No 3 for the R500 000 race.
De Kock has a strong hand as well with the well-performed Forest Path heading up his octet of entries. Included in the nominations is Ant Of Agasta, winner of the KZN Guineas Trial.
Cerise Cherry finally got it right last Saturday to win the Graham Beck Stakes after a string of seconds in Group races. Paul Matchett will be giving his charge a crack at Dingaans and he is drawn at No 21 of the 46 runners.

Holland and Narredu take over from Spencer and Surender

DARRYLL “The Dazzler” Holland, long one of the leading riders in the UK, and 10-time champion Mallesh Narredu will replace Jamie Spencer and Srinath Surender respectively in the international team to ride against South Africa in the International Jockeys’ Challenge at the Steinhoff Summer Cup race meeting at Turffontein on Saturday 29 November.
Spencer has pulled out of the jockeys’ clash after being engaged to ride Purple Moon in the Japan Cup on the same weekend, while Surender has been allowed to withdraw because of personal problems.
Holland, champion apprentice in the UK in 1991 with a post-war record total of winners, has ridden in some 20 countries and has a host of Group 1 successes to his credit. These include the Coral Eclipse Stakes and the Juddmonte International on Falbrav, the German 2000 Guineas on Dupont, the Gran Criterium in Italy on Pearl of Love and the Mainichi Okan in Japan on Godolphin’s Annus Mirabilis.
India-based Narredu has booted home more than 1600 winners at home and abroad. He has been successful in 114 graded races and has ridden in Ireland, Japan, Malaysia, Qatar and Singapore.
The international team contains champions from several countries including the UK and France. The other riders are Frankie Dettori (England), Mick Kinane (Ireland), Damien Oliver (Australia) and Christophe Soumillon (France).
Final acceptors for the Summer Cup fall due today (Monday) and the draw for barrier positions, as well as the draw for mounts in the four International Jockeys’ Challenge races, will take place at a special function at Turffontein on Wednesday evening. The six jockeys selected to represent South Africa in the Challenge and manager Michael Roberts will be presented with national colours at the function. They are Mark Khan (captain), Anton Marcus, Karl Neisius, Kevin Shea, Piere Strydom and Weichong Marwing.
Dettori and Kinane will jet into Johannesburg on Friday with the rest of the international riders due to arrive two or three days later. - Phumelela
