Secret to reading formline
16 years 7 months ago
I'm an avid and enthusiastic horse follower who recently joined the punting scene. I love to follow horses and predict the finish just like the next person.
Whats the trick to reading formline?
I mean honestly, how can one draw comparisons to a race ran months ago and read off that? There has to be "signature traits" in the formline.
Obviously on the day it all comes down to what the horse feels like doing. How is it possible to draw conclusions from a piece of paper when one knows that if a forse feels like walking, he/she will walk.
Also whats a good way to judge the market. Early morning race day or 2 minutes before the gates open and all natural instincts kick in from that beautiful wild animal.
Maybe there's a publication or website that explains horse racing from training to caring to knowing that magic look of when it goes down to the gate. Some say its the way they go down to the gate. Personally, I dont know how in the world a person can tell the difference in a ready and not so ready horse. What does a "green" horse look like?
I once saw a trimmed out, masculine horse gallop on her toes down to the gates like a true champion who couldn't wait to get the race on. I knew this cause she looked it and other people saw it as well. She was the talk of the day. I think she's still running as I type this. She got left in the dust that day, literally walked out the gate.
So you tell me. What are the traits to look out for?
Looking forward to any views on this.
Regards
Russ

Years back, I wrote a book (inspired by late Sir Mordant Milner!) : Acu-Punter; Diagnostic, Clinical Approach to Horseacing. The first print sold out and I never followed up.
Over the years, I have found it (being subjective!) extremely useful, answering the questions you raise & picked up many a 'ruffie'.
However, I am busy getting it onto PC (MS Word). I am a one finger typist!!
Contact me through the webmaster (In case there are accusations of my promoting my publication- anyway, once complete, it will be available free to anyone); I will send you an electronic once finished.

Excellent.... Thank you very much.
I'm sure you feel the same way when i say, "it's no use being so enthuastic about something but you dont really understand what is entirely going on." I'm sure your book will be a great read.

Russell

The human brain is the most amazing multi-variable, self programmimg computer, and your question is one that anyone who has hit an out-of-form patch will have had to wrestle with.
In a nutshell, my opinion is that once you have experienced enough racing that you then automatically 'weigh' and evaluate all the variables. If you study a race properly you will arrive at what 'should' happen.
My proof for this is that there are many people who "price" up a race, similar to the opening betting. Ofcourse this will differ from person to person, but very often there are many people can choose which horse will be (opening) favourite. The (sp) "favourite", a combination of form selection-and money wagered (which is also a variation of form and inside info) is the greatest 'system' for finding winners with a global hit rate of 1 in 3.
I would say that most people who make a profit from playing horses make their money more from: a. HOW they bet, b. when the BET and when they LEAVE, and c. finding the occational mistake because they remember a MATERIAL fact that has been overlooked; rather than having uncovered some super understanding.
Essentially it's about VALUE. I would say if there's anyone who is still in front after say a year of punting, then they have mastered VALUE and form is their tool, rather than having mastered form (if I have managed to explain my oinion? [or possibly onion!])

Hi Clansmen!
russelldewee, alcaponee, jack dash...
I am going to scan in the publication, with an update, during the course of the week.
Anyone else interested, pls send me your request via email to- hola@absamail.co.za
By the way, Jack Dash, your opinion (or did you mean onion?) is very much on the mark and that is an aspect covered.
