PHUMELELA MEDIA RELEASE

SUBJECT: International Jockeys’ Challenge Turffontein Saturday 29 November

DATE: Wednesday 22 October

RELEASED BY: Phumelela Gaming and Leisure Limited

Reigning UK champion Jamie Spencer will replace Ryan Moore in the international team to ride against South Africa in the International Jockeys’ Challenge at the Steinhoff International Summer Cup race meeting at Turffontein on Saturday 29 November.
Moore has been forced to withdraw from the international team because of a riding engagement in the Japan Cup on the same day as the Challenge.
Spencer is one of the biggest names in UK racing. He was only 17 when he landed his first classic success, partnering Tarascon to victory in the 1998 Irish 1000 Guineas.
He went on to win the Irish Apprentices’ Championship the following year and has since won the British Jockeys’ Championship twice, booting home 180 winners to claim the title in 2005 and then deadheating with Seb Saunders in an amazing finish to the race for the title last year.
The 28-year-old’s major international successes include capturing the $5-million Dubai Duty Free on Dubai World Cup night in 2006.
The other international riders are Frankie Dettori, Mick Kinane, Damien Oliver, Christophe Soumillon and Srinath Surender. It’s one of the strongest international team of riders yet assembled and they will clash with South Africa in four Challenge races on Summer Cup day.
Reigning South African champion jockey Mark Khan will captain the South African side. The other SA riders are Anton Marcus, Weichong Marwing, Karl Neisius, Kevin Shea and Piere Strydom.
