THE going at Longchamp on Saturday had officially dried out to a penetrometer reading of 3.2 – the equivalent of good - but some of the jockeys riding there felt that the ground was softer.

Christophe Soumillon, who rides Arc favourite Zarkava, said: "It's something between 3.4 (good to soft) and 3.6 (soft)."

Olivier Peslier added: "It's good to soft and if there's no rain it will be like a thick carpet."

Clerk of the course Christian Delporte said: "It's a beautiful day today and the track is drying but rain is definitely forecast tonight and tomorrow morning.

“The ground is pretty firm underneath the top layer and it won't take much rain to make it soft. We have kept and 18 metre strip railed off for tomorrow's big meeting and that should be just a little firmer than the rest of the track."

Scotia, there's been a fortune of rain overnight in Paris and the gound will be very soft. Zarkava's participation is in doubt and I assume Duke of Marmalade might also be withdrawn.

If Sun Classique was fit she would have taken her place in today's line up and would have had a great chance.

As fast as she is National Colour would have preferred firmer ground but must still be a good each way bet.

My long time fancy for the Arc is last year's short head runner up Youmzain. The Arc usually springs up an upset so tread cautiously, especially in the wet.

Break a leg.

There's a bit of confusion but the doubt in the ground must be a concern...

ALAIN DE ROYER-DUPRE has moved to allay fears that Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe favourite Zarkava might not line up in this afternoon's world turf championship by insisting that "in principal she runs".

In an interview with BBC Radio Five Live this morning, the trainer reacted to rumours that Longchamp had been attacked with rain by saying that testing conditions would be a "catastrophe" for the unbeaten filly.

Asked if she could miss the race, he said: "You have to take the decision - if it's too much, it's impossible."

However, De Royer-Dupre, reassured by the news that only 1mm of rain fell on Longchamp overnight, has since told racingpost.co.uk that Zarkava - who has this morning drifted to 5-2 having started the day as short as 7-4 - will bid for Arc glory providing nothing unforeseen happens between now and race time.

He said: "It is not true to say that she does not run. In principal, she will run in the Arc. We had a lot of rain at Chantilly last night but apparently not in Paris."

Longchamp officials today report a penetrometer reading of 3.3, just marginally softer than yesterday's 3.2 reading.

Leading French trainer Jean de Roualle this morning walked the track and said: "The ground is good to soft and there is a lot of grass on the course."
