It is wise to wait for the final field and after the official Gallops get to the card call evening at the Bookies.
You can pick up big discounts on all runners sometimes double the odds.

… by that time you have probably lost all the perceived “value”.

Imo it depends on the horse and the A/P odds currently offered ....

Take a horse like Hoedspruit - currently trading A/P at 20/1 - that's without knowing for sure that the horse is even going to make the trip to KZN and if the intention is to run in the July (it may even pick up an injury in the meantime) - surely in making the final field, I doubt it will trade at shorter than 10/1 - so if one can get a stretch on the card call evening, one should still get some 'value' - and then you are at least sure (bar a late injury) that the horse will run

But take for example a horse like Double Superlative - say he wins the Derby on Saturday (very likely imo) and then goes to KZN and wins (or run close) in the Daily News - surely he may start at say 5/2 in the July - but currently he is trading at 12/1 A/P ; on the other hand, he might not even go to KZN and then the 12/1 won't help much - so one takes a view and backs that view - or not

Not necessarily. I have seen punters that got 20/1 on Marinesco on card call evening when it won the July.
And last year's race Kommetdieding was offered at 20/1 on card call evening.
The shrewdies won big time.

Imo the serious punters will play pennies on Ap and save the pounds for the big night.
