Happy New Year to all Clanners and to Dave and zoro, may Humble Tune start the year off with a bang ;)

Competitive racing imo - thoughts ....

R1: Trappy looking - Carl Vinson supported in the market, but drawn a bit wide and not the easiest to win on debut around the turn; Naval Guard for the all-conquering Peter stable comes back after a break during which he was gelded, so from a good draw is my preference

R2: Pashasa knocking at the door; strictly at the weights, she may struggle to beat Twice a Miracle (but Gavin probably is a few lengths 'better' than the apprentice); Run for Isla probably needed her last run and should improve to feature, while Back to Formentera is also one to consider for the placings; Dantheras from pole position should have the run of the race and should also improve this distance

R3: Aryaam overdue and no surprise if she wins this; main danger imo could be Motown Magic, who should improve this distance; others like Call Me Master, Humble Tune, Kool Baikal, Keeping the Peace and Ball Rolling make this a competitive handicap

R4: Marchingontogether trounced his field last time, and on that run he may have improved lots in Gauteng and on a line of form through Infinite Wonder and Flying Carpet could prove tough to beat, even giving weight away to Sparking Water; Smoking Hot has not won for a year, but looks best of the rest

R5: Supreme Quest has a lot in her favor and should prove the right one; Rain on Holland needs to give SQ 3 kgs and probably prefers at least 1600 these days; all the others probably fighting out minor money

R6: Pyromaniac disappointed in the DIngaans, but may be better over 1400 and holds most of these; main danger at the weights could be the filly Perfect Witness, but even slight improvement from any of the balance could provide an upset; I really fancied Slings and Arrows last time, but an indifferent ride cost him a place at least - more to do here though

R7: Will depend on which horse can keep his form from the Summer Cup; Second Base tries blinkers and could be the fly in the ointment on his 3yr old form

R8: Clafoutis looks the right one; Pin Up looks the main danger and outsider Snow Palace could provide the upset judged on her form over 1600 - was down the straight though

R9: Not an easy close; Flame Flower has a widish draw, so Escape Artist may be the right one; KZN visitor Trump My Queen looks capable and the stable has been in good form up here

Enjoy B)

Well done to Julie for insisting on calling back the jockey to ask about his runners after he prematurely leaves - Every other presenter would have left him to leave. Credit where it is due.

Just noticed something about jockey on Race 3 - 9 Call Rolling...
*R A Venniker -2.5 +3.0...

Normal riding mass is 53,5kgs...a number of available jockeys without claim (more experienced) could have had the ride...rather than allowing the jockey overweight nullifying the benefit of the claim..
Finished 6,25 lengths off the winner or 5,45 lengths off the 3rd placed horse or 4,25 lengths off the 5th placed horse (last stake place) so the effect of the 3kgs overweight had a significant impact on the finishing position...

:(

TNaicker - Having backed that horse, I think the fact that she raced it three wide the entire race had more of an impact than any amount of overweight. Also, check your facts, it was way further behind the 3rd place than 0.8l.
