Vodacom end July sponsorship

Gold Circle Horseracing and Betting, the proprietary owner of the Vodacom Durban July - Africa’s Greatest Horseracing Event, advise that Vodacom will unfortunately, not be renewing their sponsorship which currently runs until July 2022.

Part of the immense success of the ‘July’ has been the longevity provided by having had only two major sponsors over the past 58 years with only the 2001 event proceeding without a title sponsor for transitional reasons.

The “Durban July” raceday has become part of the fabric of South Africa in terms of the racial harmony that the event encourages. The outfits that adorn the thousands of enthusiastic racegoers benefit the local and national fashion industry. Marquee suppliers and those that provide related equipment, catering and other services, thrive on this once-a-year bonanza, which pre-Covid, contributed over R300m to the local economy every year.

“We will remain eternally grateful to Vodacom for their commitment to the event over the past 20 years and for the extensive marketing effort that they have contributed to growing this event into what it is today,” said Michel Nairac, CEO of Gold Circle.

Imho it would benefit the sport if a quality replacement sponsor comes on board. Could be asking for too much but if the purple and yellow team gets the
deal it will be a bit too much overkill.
In the past the big races in the country were sponsored by various companies like
Rothmans July.... Greyville
Holiday Inns Summer Cup....... Turffontein
Benson and Hedges Metropolitan Stakes.... Kenilworth.
The Durban July has been steadfast with only a single sponsor change in
Vodacom taking up the baton after the cigarette ban.
The Holiday Inns evolved into Sun International, Gomma Gomma, Steinhoff etc. even lost count of the number of changes.
The Cape Met also went the same route after J&B fell off the Bandwagon.
Now they are coupled with the Summer Cup brought to you by the WSB.
South Africa's Premier Race needs to find a sponsor that will bring people out of the sphere of
Horseracing to the racecourse and assure sponsorship for a minimum 5 years perhaps?

I don't think Hollywood will bid for the July, tbh they don't need to, every flyer and add will have Hollywood Greyville ... Unless of course their deal with KZN runs to 2023?

It's more of a social event and should imo be sponsored by a nationally recognized brand
