Sadly, stamina beyond 2000m is not valued by most owners or trainers in SA, and this has not been helped by the lack of racing opportunities for stayers on our program. We frequently elect our “ champion stayers” on performances at 2400m, which is really a classic trip and not a true staying trip.
We used to have gr 1 races with decent prize money at 3200m- due to a dearth of suitably bred horses and the poor race programs dished up by our operators, the gold cups are today a pale shadow of what they were.
Vercingetorix is already well established as a leading sire, and throwing a decent stayer will, I’m afraid, do little or nothing for his prospects.
