I believe it to be...... when a horse refuses to load at the pens....... this is when the term is used - so i believe it to be...they never say.... scratched at the gates - refused to load.

Its definitely something to do with the weights. The jockey must be cannot make the carded weight.
I do know you allowed to be over by a certain amount.
Most of the times another jockey will take the ride.

If the Clerk of scales scratches it is usually to do with weights or other technicalities. I dont believe it has to do with loading. Of course I could be wrong just my opinion

Thanks guys. Also believe it to be about weight rather than loading as I saw this a few hours before race time.. Perhaps the jockey can't make the weight and no suitable replacement available?

Its when racing commence on the day and any horse is scratched by a stipendary steward for whatever reason

when a horse is SCRATCHED right on race time..... u can bet your bottom dollar - THAT IT REFUSED TO LOAD !
