WATUSI - What You See ? Really?
4 years 9 months ago
Sometimes I am gobsmacked.
Now the name of a racehorse has been totally changed for some inexplicable reason.
WATUSI
The Watusi /wɑːtuːsi/ is a solo dance that enjoyed brief popularity during the early 1960s
Watusi or Watusis may refer to one of the following:
Tutsi, an African ethnic group
Watusi (album), 1994 studio album by The Wedding Present
Watusi (dance), a solo dance from the early 1960s
Watusi (film), a 1959 film with George Montgomery and Taina Elg
Watusi (firework), a type of firecracker
Please Allie, get it right.
If in doubt...ask.

Wow. I must say I have resisted the urge to post on this topic once I saw it but it has irked me so much that I will.
I am GOBSMACKED by the ridiculous nature of this post; for someone to suggest that a 1960's dance name should be known enough by a young commentator, and a great one at that, to know that it would be offensive to someone if called WAT U SEE, then I absolutely give up.
I genuinely thought this post would be about the form of the horse itself, but I see it is calling out the commentator, who, given his command of the language to this point, I'm pretty sure would've initially read Watusi as Watusi and made the change to Wat U See as it just seems a natural change.
If my post is offside then please delete it Bob, but I think this thread is uncalled for.

I am really not that bothered about whether the horse gets called What You See or Watusi - the much more important issue here is the inexplicable improvement - this should not be allowed imo - no matter what the excuse is for the improvement - the horse should be suspended indefinitely - specimens taken and if ANYTHING untoward is found, the standard process of penalties / fines should be imposed - and given previous incidents, I think a harsher penalty should be forthcoming - if found guilty of course ....

I fully agree with you Frodo
The only thing wrong is not the name or how it's pronounced it's WATTHEYSEE (THE TWO FRIENDS I INTRODUCED TO RACING) we lost the P6 there

THE STIPENDIARY STEWARDS REPORTED:
a) Jockey S Brown became unbalanced when CAPELLA MAGNA jumped out sharply leaving the starting stalls.
b) Jockey C Storey reported that he felt something amiss with ELECTRA FLYING in running. The Veterinary Surgeon was requested to examine this gelding.
c) Apprentice K Matsunyane reported that PRINCE IN WAITING made an abnormal respiratory noise in running and did not persevere with his riding from the 200m. The Veterinary Surgeon was requested to examine this gelding.
d) WATUSI (C Maujean), the winner, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Assistant Trainer A Peter advised (GF).
When afforded the opportunity to explain to the Board the improved performance of WATUSI, Assistant Trainer Peter could offer the Board no suitable explanation. His attention was drawn to the Rules pertaining to In and Out running.
So that is that
