They get paid to ride your horse, trainers get paid to train your horse
I was being pedantic, owners are the most important cog in racing

... before they rant on about illegal betting sites I hope the conference has analysed the levels of customer service demonstrated from conventional sites. If bookies close down “successful” punters then good luck to those punters giving their business to “illegal” bookies.

Yeah Bob for sure!! The owner buys the horse either for fun or in the hope of winning a July of ar least some stake money back. That stake money and the percentage of stakes money that jocks and trainers get plus all the prize money th owners earn comes from who and where. The rich and not so rich people who daily go to the tote and spend their hard earned cash that create millions of rand worth of pools which the operators grab 25% of to run the game and pay themselves the owners and trainers and jocks . And you say the owners are the most important? Therein lies the problem. The people who run the game think they are the most important the owners think they are the most important but the very people who provide the cash for all these people to continue are treated like crap. You stick to your opinion I'll respect that butI'll stick to mine .

Without owners there will be no racing. Without punters there will still be racing albeit in a different format. The owners are also punters, the biggest punters too.

No one entity is bigger or more important than the other. The game is bigger than any individual or group. With the greatest respect Mac I'd love to see what format the game would go to without the gambling money. Gamblers have many options and if horse racing stopped they would move on to casinos and others. Just my opinion of course.

One thing i noticed at a dinner held yesterday... That diversity in racing needs to be looked at..
I only saw one image but all the delegates were male
You just need to look at how our female riders are supported

If it wasn't for punters, owners would be racing for what?

This is the picture. A few passionate wealthy owners, just a few. They will retain their trainers. Wealthy owner A will invite wealthy owner B to race against his proud colt at his trainer’s track. The two owners will agree on a bet. They race and make a day of it. Just like the golf course. It’s not about the cost to play golf nor will it be about the cost to race, it’s all a hobby.
Remember, owners were around much longer than before official punters.
