Who will be the new RA CEO?
5 years 4 months ago - 5 years 4 months ago
Larry got pushed and now the RA board have to choose a new leader. Having a look at the factions within the board, I would have a guess at two clear favourites.
1. Clyde Basel - Surplus to requirements at Phumelela and to be brutal, on a salary package way above what his fellow commentators are on. Judging by those very average calls on Met Day I think he would be well advised to look at other alternates. The rumour mill has it that Scott is not his biggest admirer. Previous loyal servant to Jooste and van Niekerk when heading up the RA. Has big Larrys stamp of approval and that will assist. Will follow the surplus to requirement at Phumelela route forced on Moodley when he joined the NHA if he lands the position.
2. Colin Gordon - a more palatable choice that does not wear the stench of the Jooste squirrel as does Basel. Also a previous RA head boy who is popular with the majority of the rank and file. His time at the NHA would stand him in good stead among some of the board and this could prove crucial. Has a more comprehensive CV both in terms of education and racing than Basel. Currently in need of employment since the untimely death of Chris Gerber. My stand out for the job.

No one applying stands a chance that's for sure. You may be right Muhti it all depends how aligned the old guard are and whether King Rat has a vote or not

Both good racing background, very knowledgeable and pleasant personalities.
Sure it will be a big job to increase the RA membership and get racing on an upward swing again.
May the best man win and get plenty support going forward.
Is there other candidates?

......maybe John Stuart can call up his old ex-Singapore drinking buddy Kieth Dye like he did to take the CEO job at the TBA back in the day.....only for him to chicken out after given the job and join Phumelela instead....funny thing.....Kieth after leaving Phumelela does not list this job on his Linkedin profile.....and we see why racing is in the shit with this jobs for pals and close family.....best that they take untainted Colin before Phum finds them an alternative.....

You have let yourself down OTA
This thread would have been great without the negative and personal comments about Clyde.
Anyway Clyde should probably have never left the RA in the first place and knows this job back to front.
If he applies he would be big favourite and get my vote ( I’ve not got one )
Built in compare, knows the marketing side back to front... It’s a no-brainer
Craig Gordon also seems a good man
Charles Savage? Probably too busy and been a bit quiet since joining board

.....since when did Basel emerge as the holy cow....if he gets in above Gordon then there are still dark forces at play.....Clyde aint no saint....his move from the RA to Phum was under a cloud......Charles Savage has a highly successful investment company.....and unlike Larry back in the day does not need a paying job....how can the baton be passed back and forth between the last of the Jooste cohorts.....

Bob like everything else in the politics that exists in SA horseracing, it depends upon which side of the fence you sit.
My opinion is that anyone with any affiliation to Jooste should not be considered for the job. The RA needs to be used as a counter to Phumelela and the last thing we need is another yes man in the CEO position. The new guy also needs to have a skills set in the business environment to maximise opportunities for owners, not to be another Phumelela lackey like Larry.
I am unapologetic for my views.

You guys seem to be championing him? Something you know that we don`t?

In the days of yore and before corporatisation all these types of positions including commentators were on a voluntary basis.
