TOTE DEDUCTION
5 years 9 months ago
About 5 years ago I emailed the Tote requesting a breakdown of the amount deducted from Tote Racing Bets.
A Mr Du Plessis kindly replied with the %,which was somewhere around 21% and where ,in percentage terms this was broken down in the various cost areas.
My thought for some time has been is this same percentage deducted from Tote Football bets as one would have thought that the costs involved are considerably less than Racing.
Can anybody confirm this

I have not looked but would imagine if a pool or gross income vs the payout times the number of winning tickets ie net total payout.
The gross less the net would be the take out?
Does this not show on the TAB payout website.

Not to forget we still pay 6% on winning bets on horseracing and nil on sports bets with the bookies.

I think what I am saying is that a huge amount is taken on the guys playing the various Football bets
and the costs, overheads etc are in proportion much less.

The deduction on the soccer pools taken on the Phumelela platform is a eye watering 33%
You read that correctly, 1 in 3 Rand wagered goes into their greedy little hands.

At first glance, it looked like you were talking about the deduction after a scratching, but you mean the rake, or the vig as some of us think of it lol.
Fyi, the maximum take out of the tote pools is governed by the gambling act. From memory, I think the win and place pools have a maximum take out of 17% and the exotics are allowed up to 25%., so the 21% mentioned above could be the average. Obviously, they take out the maximum allowed because I guess it's the business model that works for them.
I am surprised to hear soccer is 33%, but given that the lottery looks like 50%, nothing should surprise anyone.
Roulette has a house advantage of 2.7%. Blackjack the house advantage is about 0.5% and if you aren't super tight you will give away another 1.5% so they probably have a 2% edge. With poker the game has percentages and so do the competitors, so your skill can give you a proper edge. Fixed odds horse betting with skill and value playing will probably get you to single digits and a shot at winning if you vary the size and let bad races go.
So how you beat 17% or 25%? I have no idea. I don't think it's possible. It's like playing high number dice, only your dice has no number 6.
