what will happen if the Jock DOES count the number of STRIKES ( 12) & he's 50 m from home - NOW STOPS STRIKING the horse, ( ALL 12 are used up ) so as NOT to get a fine......and he gets beat by a whisker...

will he be fined for NOT trying every inch of the way ?

Did anyone consult with the horse to find out what is the fair / magic amount of strikes?
Will we see a happier horse being struck 13 times compared to16 times?
I know out of past experience in school that 2 shots is better than 6................

Another attempt to take racing into the 21st century in RSA is being greeted with predictable resistance from the usual dinosaurs.

For the record the UK changed to 7 strikes a couple of years ago. After a similar hue and cry riders appear to have adjusted well to the new rules. South Africa, as usual, requires more lenient rules so gets nearly double the 'allowance'.

Instead of 'experts' lecturing us on how horses need 'guidance' and 'persuasion' why not rather ask a rider like Piere Strydom how he has managed to win as many races as he has by striking horses as many times in a month as other jockeys do in a week on the same number of mounts.

I am completely over seeing horses with no chance of winning or placing being 'guided' in the latter phases of a race. I am almost tempted to walk down to the 400m mark to check that the sign reads '400' and not 'Start Whipping From This Point'.

I wonder if anybody ever consulted these unfortunate 3 ???

""Aintree and the British Horseracing Authority will review the deaths of three horses during the three-day Grand National meeting.

Up for Review suffered a fatal injury in the National on Saturday after it was brought down at the first fence.""

......that thought of not smacking or counting smacks goes completely out of the mind when the adrenalin kicks in....did you see Frankie Dettori yesterday on Lah Ti Dar.....used up his seven before he was headed.....had he then put the stick away.....the punters would have been stuck away.....

Lots of comments but have of you every felt or had a smack with the crop being used
by the jockeys in South Africa
Believe me I have tried it out on my bare leg and hardly felt a thing
One only feels it if hit by the edge and not the flat

....these new crops are gentle....but as Bob poses limiting the amount of smacks is going to encourage some riders to go back to the real sharp thin sticks that really do hurt.....and yes it is not how you strike a horse but where.....saw that Peruvian cowboy chopping a mount in the gut....some others flaying away and smacking challenging mounts in the face....we should be more concerned how it is wielded and not as yet be discouraging its use totally.....certain horses need a reminder others not.....if jocks have not worked it out yet they should start paying the NHRA kitty to contribute to travel more often to the bush and try see that geriatric horses are not thrashed there either.....:S
