Jack Milner: While it appears the Mauritius Turf Club are now happy to give both Piere Strydom and Peruvian Carlos Herrera Gomez licences to ride on the island, they have yet to inform the two jockeys of their decision.
Last Thursday they put up a notice on their website which reads: “On the recommendation of the Licensing Committee, the Board of Directors of MTC approved the request of coaches (trainers) Rameshwar Gujadhur and Amar Sewdyal to engage jockeys Piere Strydom and Carlos Herrera Gomez respectively.”
However, Strydom says he has yet to hear anything official. “I saw the post on their website but nobody has told me that we have been cleared to go.”
Until he does, Strydom intends to carry on taking rides in South Africa.
He has been offered a position to ride for Gujadhur for the next few months.
Herrera Gomez is the nephew of Guillermo Figueroa and came from Peru to ply his trade in South Africa. Clearly, he is also keen to spend some time on the Indian Ocean island.
